There are many reasons that the IBM 5100 was important, at least to the people who sent us into the future and the past, but the primary reason was it’s presence as the initial first home-use portable computer. Due to this fact, in time travel, it would always physically be compatible with technology back as far as it’s creation, at least. It can function as an in-between with more advanced computers to bring back information into the past that would otherwise be anachronistic in a format that would not arouse suspicion. It is also slightly paradoxical, as there are internal references and explicit design choices that were designed in reference to the future with relation to it, and information about the past that could not have been learned or created without time travel.
