Moving the lab

We live in a three story townhouse. A home basically made of stairs. We are moving everything from the basement floor to the third floor, and the third floor to the basement floor.

Today is leg day.

More or less, the kids are taking over the entire downstairs, and the lab is moving to the top floor so the adults have room to work and focus. Middle floor is family zone!

I’ll post the occasional photo here as the day (or weekend) goes on. At the end, you’ll see how Cosmos TTI lab is put together and what’s in it :)

Here we go:

Titor help me. I need some bigger Allen wrenches.

Worst part is about half over.

Progress continues. 12 feet of table space now and a place to put the digital piano.

That tree is something my mom bought in the 80s. It used to be a prime decorating piece in our home. It emits a frequency that assists in OBE, and it also has fake coconuts I used to think were mangos. Nostalgia!

We got quite a bit done yesterday. Still plenty of reorganizing and things, but I will take some photos later this afternoon to show what's up. Sadly, my computer speakers died in the move. RIP in peace.

We are nearing success; here's a test run:

...I forgot about the balloons.
Don't hate on the balloons. They were in my room when I was born above my crib and then all of the children's cribs.

Thats some move :)
The kids room turned out a lot better than I hoped, and now the entire upper floor is ours.

So much work, but will be well worth it and we'll get a lot more done this way. I failed at getting photos today, but it's pretty much just a messier version of what you see above. Tomorrow I'll get the rest of it tidied up and get some proper photos together. It's also revealing another project I'll have to incorporate into TTI here in the near future that will fund some projects on our land ;)

Time for some photos, and the revelation of my dark and dirty Lego secret.

Got everything set up the way I like to work, plenty of room for my feet underneath, but doesn't look that way from the photos. The computer is a prebuilt "gaming" one that replaces my six year old iMac. Switching back to Windows was a nice change, as much as I like Apple. I can do more things more easily this way though.

I've got more deskspace, and this is probably where I'll build the new 3D printer. Those are some of our Lego books on the table there... A small subset of what we actually have. The mini-drawers are something we bought long ago as our quest to sort all this stuff out began...

We have a couple 16TB NAS boxes that I can finally get out of the cupboard. This stores a local copy of some old family videos I transferred off VHS a while back, our movie and TV collection, emulation stuff and a few other secrets I may show you sometime.

Beneath that is the Xbox, not hooked up to a TV. Everything runs over the local network in here and I can get at it through the Xbox app on Windows. Probably losing some quality in doing that; I don't mind. I wear glasses.

The Google WiFi in the first picture is wired to the gigabit switch on top of the NAS. That feeds the main computer, the second computer behind me, the Xbox, the two NAS and... I think that's it. The wifi is an extension of the main Google wifi downstairs. Everything is nice and fast.

Some more Lego, and a peek at the piano. I've been teaching myself to play on and off over the last couple years, but it's been put away because we had no room for it to be out. Now we do, and I'll get back into that. A couple more 64-drawer bins back there, I love these things.

Tough to see, but the three 35 gallon bins in the are 100% full. Carrying those up the stairs was not something I care to talk or think about ever again.

Second PC that runs Plex and some other downloady stuff. Using the cabinets below to store 3D printer filament, nice and comfy in there. The little black bar thing is a Wii sensor for emulation.

Wil add information to the next couple posts shortly, posted all the pics from my phone where it's no fun to write.

Behind the door is yet more Lego shame, and our 1980s pastel palm tree. Mentioned above, this is something that's been in my house since at least 1985. I watched Back to the Future for the first time with this pinnacle of interior design watching over me. And now it's mine.

DeLorean parts for scale.

At multiple points in the past, the general idea has been to sort everything by set into these smaller drawers, then move them to bigger and bigger bucks as more parts are found. But... Then entropy happens. Something you can't avoid in a house literally made of stairs with four women, a dog a cat and a turtle.

Enough Lego, look at the Occulus:

And the sad remains of our last 3D print:

Added some blue light pointing up at the palm tree. It's very comfy in here at night with a little synthpop.

This is still downstairs, but it's part of the collection:

Notice the book - Homesteading plans for constructing chicken enclosures and things. The long term goal is to liquidate the Lego and use that money to build some things out on our 20 acres. Off-grid, self-sufficient.

I still have lego as well, mostly technic lego. I managed to 3d print some lego pieces at some point, its sometimes useful for testing structures and making rudimentary things. I made a van der graaff generator using lego for support structure but I took it apart to make something else.

Having a well organized space really helps to be more productive.

This started out as a childhood collection, and I've managed to drag it along with me for the past 30+ years back and forth across the country a few times. Plenty has been lost, but I've kept adding to it pretty much up until COVID. Lego was my Minecraft of the 80s and 90s. There's something very cathartic about getting everything put together "just so".

Now that there's a proper place to do it, I might finally be able to get it organized again.

There's actual Minecraft lego sets now.

I just found out that there was a new delorean time machine model lego set released this year, but right now it seems to be out of stock.
