John Titor - some questions.

Let me try to put this marketing thing in simplest terms...

1. Say that Star Wars wasn't a copyrighted story or movie, and that it just appeared online in some form.

2. Then I latched on to Luke Skywalker and some things he said about the Force and present it as real.

3. Then I start an online school about the Force and used Skywalker and other things from the story to collect tuition, application fees, sell a book, t-shirts etc. My campaign is widespread.

4. Then I abandoned the whole thing for a lack of general public interest.

5. Now the remnants of what I put out there during my campaign are being discovered by other people and the hints of legitimacy are mistaken for actually legitimacy.

6. As a result people think Luke Skywalker is "important" and not just a good character from a story that made some good points about finding a balance in life.

7 .Now there are people who've been involved in this thing from the beginning can be referred the authorities on the topic.

END ANALOGY.

Religion: noun; 3. A pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance.

If I were cynical I'd say that this Titor thing has happened before throughout history. But in the spirit of not being cynical I'll just say that you can see how these things take on a life of their own, once someone has nurtured the story without discipline.

I'm glad we're having this discussion. It really puts one's world in perspective (as long as that is one's goal).

Matt,

My response would be this:

Tomorrow take a walk downtown. At random ask 50 people two questions. No hints, no body language, no clues of any sort. Just the questions. The two questions are

1. Who is Luke Skywalker?

2. Who is John Titor?

I'll make a prediction as to the responses.

Q1 - 47 people will correctly identify Luke Skywalker. The other 3 are probably legally dead but haven't, as yet, discovered that fact (what a surprise when you tell them).

Q2 - zero people will know who or what a John Titor is. (Don't try to explain it to them. You'll either end up in the County psych unit or the three people from Q1, who now realize that they are the walking dead, will attempt to lunch on your brain.)

That will answer the question as to whether or not John Titor is important, topical or a balancing force in anyone's life.

Guess what?

I asked 12 people this morning, all strangers, and no one had heard of John Titor, and they all, of course, new Luke Skywalker.

I still think my point is valid, because, well, it's important to me what the poster known as Titor said, whether he said it or someone else said it.

what about the Alabama Rampage???

Quoted from CNN...

and the other in Germany???
Quoted:

Masked and dressed in black, the gunman walked through classrooms killing 14 teachers, two schoolgirls and one of the first policemen on the scene before taking his own life. [/COLOR]

The problem is that these events become to common...

Re: what about the Alabama Rampage???

recall,

Now 11, but yet another sort of a Wak-o- event

and the other in Germany???

Huh? Compare and contrast these two events with Waco. Leaving out the part about "some people were shot", where are the similarities?

Re: what about the Alabama Rampage???

BTW: More proof that I'm the real time traveler. I predicted in 2001 that when 2004 came and there were no Weekly Wacky Waco events people would declare just about anything a Waco-like event even if there were no similarities between the two,

I even asked on a few threads for members, in 2001 and 2002, to define what a Waco event was so we had a standard by which to make the comparison. No takers. None of The Believers wanted to commit to a definition. I wonder why? Hmmm...
