You unexpectedly time travel to 1985 with no way back. What do you do?

You would be there 16 years before 9/11. Knowing that Russia will withdraw from Afghanistan, you would best prevent 9/11 and other atrocities by persuading the US NOT to back and give weapons to 'ole Bin Liner in the first place. With hindsight you could prevent the invasion of Kuwait and prevent 2 wars in Iraq which solved nothing and killed lots of US servicemen and hundreds of thousands of people in IraqHell, with 16 years of forward planning you could pay to train and equip your own counter-terrorist force to assassinate, discredit or simply make disappear Islamic (or other) troublemakers before they even know what they are going to do themselves. Just ask them if they are Sarah Connor before you blow them away.
Wow, you really thought this in depth. I will keep this at the front of my mind if I ever invent time machine and get motivated enough to prevent 9/11.Read: It isn't the time machine that is the problem. It is the motivation.

Found this place by accident, joined up and looked at this thread first...So if I was back in '85 and stuck there, I would probably set myself up with some investments, Microsoft and Apple for starters, being English I am a massive football fan(soccer to our American friends), I would go and watch my team play at there old 'spiritual home' as I never got a chance too, I would probably place some bets with my 30 years of knowledge, nobody expected Wimbledon to beat Liverpool in 1988, and a few other bets so that I could have enough money to be able to love comfortably, as I am a bus enthusiast, I would know about Bus Deregulation in '86 and would look to buy into the privatised bus companies..

I also think it would be cool to be in Berlin the day the Wall came down, maybe even go to South Africa to see Mandela get released. I would probably try set myself up as a sports maybe, I would know who was going to make it...

There is the question would I change my own life, I think I would make sure to look after my younger self, though I would not change anything in my life, despite having a hard time
Welcome back, mrfozz. Especially for you:
https://www.cartoonstock.com/cartoonview.asp?catref=jcen977 (Time Travel Agency: Book a trip to the 80's and get a free pair of parachute pants! - CartoonStock -)

1. Go inside country deep enough no one can find me.

2.Find a local woman to get a roof above head.

3. Start to learn a language.

4.Take any job available for illegal workers.

5. Buy legal paper and live happily until die.

So many things. Seeing as there is no reliance on my younger self going back, I would assume I cannot affect the timeline.

In that case, I would go visit my 9yr old self and family. i would also give myself and family advice on what's coming so they know and can prepare.

I always have my mobile and laptop on me so, after taking everything off my phone and tablet, I create a company to reverse engineer my phone and tablet and see what my knowledge and understanding of computers would get me.

I'd probably make a few bets before capitalising on the stock market crash of 1987.

After all this, I would like to think I have helped my family (and a few friends) to greater things and I would travel the world.

Later on, knowing of a number of disasters and major events, I would probably start a warning programme of sorts.

I could 'write' books and songs (maybe perform as well) and become a philanthropist.

As we got to the mid-nineties (probably earlier with my phone and tablet reverse engineered), I would do my best to create google, ebay, amazon, paypal and Facebook in one website.

I would be the first manufacturer of smart phones and apps.

What a life I could have...

Lets see now, if the American Pharos won the triple crown, I would find enough money to allow me to make a shitload of cash, find a good wife and buy a nice home and raise a good family! Oh, and good visit some old drinking buddies! I now wonder if some others have already done that?

First of all, i do not want to time travel with my current body, I want to wake up in the body I had at the time with my current knowledge. 1985, huh? I would tell my Mom to not get into the car before the accident she was in. Let my father drive and die in it alone. Then we would be free of all the abuse. My Mom would get remarried to a nice man. I would start dancing, playing tennis with my brother and playing the piano. Then in 1990 I would tell my Mom's sister not to get treatment for her breast cancer, maybe just radiation. In 1991, my Mom's husband would take a leave of absence to work in the US for 3 months to pay off the mortgage. Then i would tell him to put aside $100 for me and i would invest it at the beginning of 1994 into EXX, then Ascend communications in 1995, then viasoft in 1996, then yahoo in early 1997 until dec 31, 1999, then hw until aug 12, 2005, then at the end of 2005 into corvel, at the end of 2006 into first solar, at the end of 2007 into ebs, then at the end of 2008 into select comfort until 2012 april 13th when i put it into netflix until 2014 march 3rd, when i put it into apple until nov 23 when i sell it and repurchase netflix on jan 5th, 2015 until nov 30th when i would buy gmcr until it doubles then i would put it into a merriman type pie. In the end, i would be a multimillionare from $100. As for my life in 1992: i would take German and another foreign language in high school in Hungary. I would dance, play tennis and the piano all through high school. In 1996 i would come to the United States to study at Rutgers: Spanish, German beside Bio classes, would dance at Arthur Murray, play tennis, start folklore dancing and rowing. On the weekends: horseback riding and scouts. I would travel on the weekends. In the summers i would be in Latin America learning Spanish and dance. In 2000, i would go to Miami to med school and i would salsa, tango, watersport and tennis thru the years while my brother learns German and English. In 2004 i graduate and move back to Hungary. Then my life unfolds as follows: I meet Joe and I travel for 1 year with the family before starting the residency. I would continue with the hobbies: dance, pole dance, horseback ride, tennis, painting, claywork, piano, Spanish and German. I am done in 2010, get married and start a family. I would translate the b12 deficiency book, the autoimmune book and open a practice in 2013. I would buy lots of real estate then too. I would live happily ever after combining family and professional life. Let it be 1985 tomorrow: 1985 december 5th. I wake up in my old room with my brother in Szombathely, Baratsag ut 9. I am 7 years old: the perfect age to start dancing, play the piano and play tennis. I beg my Mom to let me to them. Then my father dies in a car accident. Perfect.

So tomorrow i expect to wake up in Szombathely, vaci utca, actually. I am 7 years old and my whole life is ahead of me. My brother is 3. I wake up with my current knowledge but the mentality and talents of a 7-years old. I start my three hobbies: dance, tennis and the piano. My father dies in a car accident soon and my Mom remarries. She marries a nice and fantastic man.

I would find a nice girl, travel a bit, make some babies, and sleep soundLy knowing the world will stay intact for another 32 years. I'd also start a rock band and play all my favorite tunes.....as originals...

Ok, 1985 it is. 1985 may 2nd is the date. I go back to my old body with the current knowledge. I am a first grader, finishing up school, getting ready for the summer. I win the lottery next: 2 14 30 32 33. Then i ask my Mom to take me dancing, horseback riding, play the piano and the violin, play tennis. My Mom takes only a part time job while i am in school and my brother is in kindergarden. Then there is the car accident when my father dies. He drives drunk from Poganyok. Then my Mom finds a nice man.

Key word here is unexpectedly - You did not prepare for this, so you have no winning lottery numbers or sports almanac. Using only your memory, knowledge and skills, how would you survive and/or benefit? The rules:

  1. If you were born on or before 1985, your past self still exists.

  2. Your clothing and any items on your person came back with you.

  3. There's no way back, ever. You cannot time travel again.

  4. When 2015 rolls back around, you don't time travel back to 1985; there's no time loops happening here.

So, if my old self exists already, how can i be in two bodies at once?

For the sake of argument, you've arrived in an alternate universe where the only difference is the big bang happened 32 years later than it did in our current reality. There being two of you present doesn't do anything peculiar with physics or causality (as if being thrust backwards 32 years doesn't already break some of those rules ;) )

Well, i can only imagine that we revert back in time, all of us getting younger. Since there are no alternate universes, that is the only way i can imagine it would be possible.

I think that 1985 will work. Let us go back to July 13th. I am 7 years old. This is perfect. I know the lottery numbers: 1,2,59,85,88. I know this by heart, no need to prepare. I wake up in Csempeszkopacs. The whole world goes back to the way it was on that day.

The above point you just made is why I believe a small group of humans are able to control so many people and countries in the world. Aliens may have help some of us and given this technology to them and they used it to gain money and power?

It may be wiser to read the book called "There is No Death" and understand that they are still alive somewhere is space/time. The time we humans spend on earth is limited but our souls live on forever! Smile that at one time you were able to be part of that souls life.

1985 july 13th. The day of live aid. I go back to that day. I try to find a channel that broadcasts it. Then i ask Kmama to take me to the city so i can buy the lottery ticket. I start running and working out. Everyone's memory gets deleted. Then from the fall i start dancing, horseback riding, playing the piano, play tennis, draw and paint, do ceramics. For high school i go to Karolyi Mihaly gimnazium where i learn Spanish. When i am 18, i come to the states to go to Rutgers.
