Would they ever be able to meet ?

In the movie " The Lake House " , the main characters ( played by Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock ) live two years apart ( i.e., Keanu Reeves = 2004 , Sandra Bullock = 2006 ). Through a mailbox, they are able to communicate with each other, despite the difference of time between the two.

They set a date to meet .

Is that possible since it is the mail box that is the 'time machine' and neither of them can travel through time ?

I saw that movie. Apparently, the letter remained in their timeline, so they could set a future date (beyond the date of the letters) to meet, I suppose.

Think I figured it out. He would have to meet her in her past. He would have to come to her, she couldn't go to him.

I don't remember. Is he a time traveler? I think they'd have to meet at a date in both of their futures, IMHO, like 2008.

Neither one of them time traveled. They would put a letter in the mailbox, then the message ( letter ) would appear in the other person's time. Remember, they each would stand next to the mailbox to see if and when the red flag go up or down ?

You mean he'd have to meet her in his future, right?
Yes. But she would have to choose the time / place for him to come to her.
Edited the post you quoted from "she couldn't meet him " to " He would have to meet her in her past. He would have to come to her, she couldn't go to him. "

Ijust thought of something. Consider this. He must be in an alternate time line.
He already exists in her time period, but younger, so it is a copy of himself sending her that message.

I STAND CORRECTED! LOL :) :)

She would have to find him in her current time period/timeline and he'd have no clue who she is. He'd be younger.

Well, I just finished watching this movie. I liked it. A real nice tearjerker happy ending.

I'm just curious if Paula saw an alternate version. Her replies to this thread suggest so.

Is this an experiment similar to John Titor's email experiment?

Let's compare notes.

They meet on a date sometime in 2006+ (temporally the future with respect to both of them). That's the easy way out.
What happens if they agree on meeting in 2005? That's a date that is the future for Reeves but the past for Bullock. What happens if they agree on meeting in 2003? That's a date that is the past for both of them.

The laws of physics have to accommodate all of these possibilities. If they can't then the situations are "non-physical" by definition.

We don't get to define the laws of physics to fit our desires. The laws are the laws - and that's all that there is. They don't care what we want, believe or desire. And most assuradly, the laws of physics are not subject to democracy...global climate change notwithstanding.

I haven't seen it in years. I have a horrible memory, so I would have to watch it again if I'm that far off.

Eh, trying to discuss this without giving away too much of the movie o_O

The years as presented in the movie are 2004 for Reeves, and 2006 for Bullock. 2006 is possible, 2005 is out, as is 2003; as far as both of them knowing each other. Doesn't mean that they can't meet.

Reeves does exist in her time. Doesn't he ?

So IF enough time has elapsed with their communications, then wouldn't they both know of each other and be able to meet, regardless of the 2 year difference ?

Don't see how the scenario as presented in the movie is breaking any laws of physics.

But the plot does present an interesting dilemma.

That's exactly what I was trying to say, Kerr. Thank you. If they are in the same timeline, then there really is nothing to prevent them from meeting, as you said, 2006+. I was just getting myself confused with the multiple timeline theory.

That's is where I'm having trouble too. They are in the same timeline, BUT, Reeves is 2 years behind Bullock as far as experiences, so if and when they do meet, would Reeves be missing "the knowing of " 2 years ?

Did you see a different version of the movie? Because the version I saw ended with a paradox.

I believe we saw the same version, I am just trying not to put out too much information about "all" the questionable events in the movie, spoiling it for those who haven't seen "The Lake House" yet. But yeah, the movie actually contains quite a few paradoxes, some more pronounced than others. The end, or near the end, yeah, has a big one.
The movie "Frequency" has the same basic plot, except the time span is greater between father and son, and a radio is the mode of communication instead of a mailbox.

And as you pointed out, the Titor email experiment would be the same. Different time span, different medium of communication.
