It starts with education. We are not giving ourselves the tools to understand these complex issues, and risk being the next civilisation to crumble under its own weight.
Education seems to be somewhat of an umbrella term. Would you say common sense , or healthy skepticism are part of education ? Or even experience ?
To bring in some possible controversy into the mix here with a current event, is the firing of James Comey. I am seeing and hearing people going bonkers about how Mr. Comey was investigating Donald Trump. How my thinking plays this out is that I don't believe Mr. Comey is pounding the pavement, knocking on doors, waving around his badge, and
personally doing an investigation. I believe that there are agents assigned to an investigation who are doing the work. Therfore, just because Comey was fired, does not mean those agents packed up all their stuff, put whatever they collected into storage and are like, "woo hoo, we're out'a here" and went on an extended vacation. Now, if it comes to light that the new director issues an order that any and all investigations were to be halted --- then
maybe I would start squawking too. Granted, the way Comey got fired was not the smoothest move, but, certainly does not halt any on-going investigations. My opinion only - but - the people screaming about it, are being illogical and unreasonable.
On a more humorous side, I have a friend that is an experienced and skilled hunter. Sitting around one night, drinking some beer with a group of folks, he says as a matter of factly, that if and when you hunt for wild Turkeys, always aim behind em. Because the way wild Turkeys are physically structured, they can only fly backwards.
I've never really seen a wild Turkey fly, have never been told how a wild Turkey can fly, and know that they are large and cumbersome creatures.
That they can only fly backwards, from the inflection and expression of my friend, you'd believe he was serious and telling the truth. The way he said it was with enough authority to cause me to do some research to find out if wild Turkeys can only fly backwards. What I find interesting about this event, is that I would bet money that some of the people that heard him say that, never did any research themselves and on "good authority" are passing it around if and when hunting wild Turkeys, always aim behind em, because wild Turkeys can only fly backwards.
I agree that education may play an important role in both instances, however, I would also say that there are other factors involved that are not necessarily education.
Education may be a good start, but what other important factors ( tools ? ) would you say would be involved with reaching a reasonable decision / conclusion ?
Why is it that some people would question the statement that wild Turkeys can only fly backwards, and other people accept it as fact without question ?
