No one can prove that the interior of Mars isn't composed of a layer of very dense blu cheese. As a rational being I can only hope that no one reads the pervious statement and concludes that the interior of Mars may very well be composed of a layer of dense cream cheese absent clear and convincing evidence supporting the case.
Well come on! Stop holding out on us! Is it bleu or cream???? Because I love a good, rich bleu. But I can live without another ho-hum cream!
Back to serious...
I would like all who think "science gives up" on things, or who wish to judge scientists as "not being open minded" to please not misinterpret (or project) what Darby is saying and doing here. In other words, don't get your panties in a bunch (i.e. get emotional) and jump to the conclusion that he is attacking what you believe or think.
Darby is spelling out for you the highly rational aspect of how science works. He is being dispassionate, just as science is. There are fewer and fewer people in Western society who have the patience and dedication to put their emotions away, and do what it takes to come to an appreciation of what Darby is pointing out. And that erosion of critical thinking stands as a much more dangerous problem to our society than any alleged terrorist organization or rogue state. Because since the time Western society emerged from the Dark Ages, our maturation in knowledge and understanding has been based upon rational thought, reason, and the scientific method. Especially the rise and dominance of the USA. That dominance is in jeapordy unless we can nurture that rational thought, reason, and scientific method, rather than giving in to Hollywood's preferred modes of thinking.
Just like many of you love to wave the "but you cannot prove that X is not true" flag around, let me now wave one back at you: You cannot come to appreciate the fullness of what Darby is pointing out until you have gone through the process of a higher education that is based in science .AND. come to an understanding precisely why it works and is NOT a "closed-minded" approach. (That is a conjunctive statement. Both have to be true for the result to be true)
Ruthless (just for one), I respect the hell out of you, dude. I truly and honestly do. I am not just saying that. And I understand when you say "I have had experiences that you cannot understand..." I really do. But now I want you to understand that this fact goes both ways. Because you have not completed the science-based education I have implored you to follow, it is a fact that I have had experiences as a result of this education that you cannot understand. And because I have had those experiences and you have not, I know they are holding you back from understanding why science is not flawed, and the vast majority of scientists are not "closed minded."
I am an educator. The gift I try to give to my fellow man is an appreciation for higher knowledge and the ability to use it to improve your own life. If you do not wish to avail yourself of the knowledge I (and people like me) try to share with you, that is fine. But if you start to make judgments about something you have not experienced with respect to the scientific method, I will attempt to be patient with you. Some of my well-known sarcasm may slip out, but I will continue to try and persevere, because I believe you are worth it. If I didn't think you folks are worth it, I would and could easily walk away. But the reason I continue is because I know something that could be useful to a great many people. Moreover, I have repeatable evidence to prove this in the very embodiment of my students who have gone on to graduate and be fine engineers. I even have one former student who is a NASA astronaut, and who is set to fly to the ISS within 2 years.
Science is powerful stuff, and it is pretty much responsible for every single technological convenience we all enjoy in our lives, not the least of which is that computer we use to participate here and the internet that permits us to participate. If you wish to corrupt science by passing judgment ("closed minded") about something you are under-educated about, then you are aiding and abetting the further erosion of the society we have built.... which remains the absolute most free and empowering society the world has seen, in the history we know of.
Thanks for reading...and THANK YOU, Darby, for your own continued perseverence. You do a great service to your fellow man, and I salute you many times over, sir.
