NASA finds 10th planet SEDNA!

Press release on March 15th says that NASA has discovered SEDNA, an orbiting body further out than Pluto!

Hi I am from the future. In my time pluto and sedna have been reclassified as moons however around 2016-2035 another planet is discovered called cupid and in the year 2261 a very strange planet is discovered, it is a dark matter planet which takes 546 of our years to orbit the sun, the dark matter planet is called extrinsic

Wow! What planets are Pluto and Sedna orbitting? I know they are both smaller than our orbitting moon.

Dear Anonymous,

I suppose you are right, in absence of a term to describe planets smaller than our moon, people describe these objects as moons. Maybe someone needs to create a term that can describe these objects more distinctly. Maybe there is a term out there already that I am unaware of.

anyway, who said that a moon had to revolve around a planet? it's a round rock that revolves our sun, I say that it's a sun's moon.

How about "minor planet".

Webster's New World dictionary: Third College Addition lists the moon as a celestial body that satellites a planet, among other definitions having to do with the human culture in relation to our moon. There are other planets that have moons too. Moons don't satellite the sun, planets do. That is why a new term might be needed, or the definition of a planet be altered to exclude size as a defining parameter.

Some astronomers used the term "planetoid" to describe a body that does not exhibit a large enough size, or a regular enough orbit, to be called a planet.

I remember when they found Sedna back in 2004. I was in highschool and included it in some space-related project we were doing or something.

Then they said Sedna and Pluto were no longer planets a couple of years later. Sad indeed.
 
Sedna is smaller than Pluto, and Pluto is smaller than was thought when it was still called a planet.
Today they are both dwarf planets.
Hopefully they won't delve too deep and awaken the Balrog!

I like this thread. Not the topic itself but as an example of why MOP decided to make everyone register, set up the forum software to disallow "Guest" accounts and reserved John Titor and TimeTravel_0 to the original accounts here (though there never was a John Titor "original" account on this BBS.

Look up the thread to April 8, 2004. "Guest" posted: "none. we just call them moons because they are too small to be planets"

A few minutes later Chronohistorian posted: "oops forgot to login" referring to the post made by "Guest"

Later in the thread, on April 10, 2004 "Guest" posts: "demimoon? semimoon? halfamoon? sortamoon?

The April 8th post by Chronohistorian was the only identifiable post he made on this thread and it was made to clarify who "Guest" was in the previous post. Then we have two more posts by "Guest". We don't know if it was Chronohistorian, again forgetting to login or someone else. The posts sounded like Chronohistorian, who was a regular and active member of the forum in 2004, but the water is muddied. We don't know.

What we did know in 2004 was there were sock puppet accounts and people posing as other members in attempts to annoy or discredit them by having "them" post silliness. Sure, this is just a BBS that has no real world effects to worry about. But for the members it is a place for their enjoyment and to discuss their views of reality. It helped a lot to spoil the trolls when MOP made the changes.
