Would you consider this to be police state-like?

US politicians fed up with catching an eyeful of underwear want to fine those who won't hitch up their trousers.

The Virginia state house has voted to outlaw the trend of wearing trousers so low that underwear hangs over the top.

Delegates said the habit, popular across the US and in other Western countries, was "coarsening" society.

But others hit back, urging legislators to remember their own "fashion follies" and saying the law would be used mostly against black people.

The house adopted the "droopy drawers" bill by a margin of 60-34.

If the state senate also approves, youngsters in Virginia showing too much of their boxer shorts or G-strings could be fined $50 (£26).

The habit, apparently picked up from rap and skateboarding culture, has become popular among boys and girls of all races, but particularly black youngsters.

Democrat Delegate Algie T Howell proposed the bill.

"It's not an attack on baggy pants. It's not about Janet Jackson. It's not about Randy Moss," he said, referring to the American footballer recently fined for pretending to "moon" opposing fans.

"To vote for this bill would be a vote for character, to uplift your community and to do something good not only for the state of Virginia, but for this entire country," he added.

Others were similarly offended by the current trend.

"Most of us would identify this as the coarsening of society," said Delegate John Reid, a Republican.

"Underwear is called underwear for a reason."

But Delegate Lionell Spruill, a Democrat, objected, calling it "a foolish bill".

He asked fellow politicians to remember their own former fashion faux pas, including Afro haircuts, platform shoes and shiny polyester "shell suits".

"Please, let these kids express themselves," he urged, before warning there could be a sinister side to the bill.

"This is going to be a bill that targets blacks. You know who they are going to stop," he said.

I was just wondering if you would consider this sort of thing to be indicitive of a police-state.

Re: Would you consider this to be police state-lik

i wouldn't say that's a start of a police state, but i will say that that is a pretty pathetic bill, and if any such bill was to ever be passed in ny, i would just flick the cop off writing me my fine and walk away, w/ my pants on my ankels just to piss him off...

Re: Would you consider this to be police state-lik

I believe the police state was started by the Patriot Act which gives the Government of the United States of America the ability to spy on any american without any evidence, any reason, any presumption of a crime or guilt. They can then choose whether to act on the evidence gained by spying, including the interception of email and telephone calls, the hacking of person computers and devices, going through your garbage, compiling information on your life and your habits.

and that is a police state and Americans won't stand for it, but Americans also don't know its going on. We are being told its for our Protection from Terrorists.

You are probably right, and to be honest I think it is Surely only a matter of time before Someone in America notices: "Oh s*&t, we are not "free" any more, lets do something about it". I have said many times, I don't necessarily believe waht John Titor said, but I do believe there is a possibility of a civil war in America, and if not then there is certainly a possibility of a war with North Korea (or more accurately, a continuation of the Korean war), if this is anything to go by.

I heard they withdrew that bill about the low rider pants. They were embarassed how much attention is got. So skaters rejoice.

This patriot act, all it is - will be a public admission that they can and will do this. Of course it would neglect to inform that this has been the situation for decades. Thats why i don't think it will be passed. Because they can do this right now and do it behind public knowledge, which is a far beter position to be in.

Kind regards,

Newbie_0: Yeah that is quite cool.

OllyB: I think the Patriot act was already passed, I'm not sure though, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Would you consider this to be police state-lik

No,

They're just letting you know about it, step by step.

Re: OllyB

I feel these dumb laws will only get worse.

They deeply show a lack of respect and any recognition of what america is about.

Its for our own good but violating our unharming reasonable freedoms is just plain sick.

Ill admit that america isnt as secure as we think and spying may be an option but there are or has to be other respectful ways to conduct your investigations.

Lets start with why is america not secure?

I dont think they dare find the answer cus it will lose them much power/control.

For example:
Why is it so easy to enter this country?

Supposedly an estimated 1.2 million illegal immigrants pass through the Arizona
border each year, or about 4,000 each day. Just one of them could be a terrorist.
So why dont they focus on the invading of our country?

Better yet, ask an american why do we have terrorist threats?
Your guess/info is as good mine or whatever you are told through the american source (or our media).
Be it that the hate us cus they are jealous, we have no business in their countries, we support the killing of others, involment in israel our or theirs, useless or uncertain war motives (iraq) ect ect.

Ill tell you this:
With all of this crap going on US poeple wont do a dam thing and that is because they have something to lose.
To lose:
Jobs, house, health, family, money, resources, ect ect necessities to survive.

When all or most of these things you dont have to lose..., or when you dont have no more security or nothing else to lose that affects a mass or even critical mass is when you will begin to see civil unrest.

I just want to do my share and live in peace in my land with my fellow american citizens.

BTW, that is a very dumb law. Someone in our politics gets a sissy attack and decides to rule over underwears cus he/she wants to teach youth how to dress or express.
Why not try to (rated R 21) limit the way much of music teaches our kids how to disrepect women, use drugs, violence is cool, have unsafe sex?

Remember to bukle up cus its the law and dont forget to put on your "bitches and drugs for life" CD while you take your kids to school.
Hell, leave them home. At least they wont learn how to talk like a music video thug with a limited vocabulary of a retard and have no respect for anyone especially the law.

Re: OllyB

You said it, when you talked about a Critical Mass.

Until that critical mass is realized, there will not be a civil war in this country, maybe just perhaps various civil unrest. Thats been our history as a nation for hundreds of years, no reason it has to be the beginning of the end.

I wonder what the critical mass of people who have lost everything is. I bet a 10:1 ratio would do it, 20 million people who lose their homes, jobs, healthcare, that would be enough to push things over the edge.
