A few years ago I saw the movie butterfly effect and it was really fascinating, but disconcerting at the same time. After all, what is the butterfly effect? Something we do in the past can have huge consequences in the future? Is this something real or just the product of our imagination?

In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.
