What if something went terribly wrong in the past?

This is something that has been discussed here, that many believe that time travel can only take us forward into the future. That there is no way to go into the past. Well, fair enough, I guess when it comes to the past we should leave well enough alone. After all going there to change things could change to course of history as we know it, and who knows what affect it would have.

But what if in the future we discover that something went wrong in the past, something that now effects the entire future of man kind as we know it. For example like in the movies Star Trek: The Voyage Home, the crew of the Enterprise discovered that in order to save the Earth they needed the Hunch Back Whale which was no extinct, so they went back in time to recover two of them. Now I know this is just a movie, but could it be too far off the beaten track. Things are becoming extinct, the world is changing perhaps not in a good way. What if we got to tuture and discovered to due to actions in the past the world was no doomed. Wouldn't scientist want to figure out a way to go back in time to try to fix things to change the out come. This is just a thought I had, we can say that maybe the past should be left alone, but who knows how it could end up affecting the future.

Actually, there are some theories about backwards time travel. I wouldn't rule it out. :) It probably would only depend on your method of travel. :)

If you do not take the Multiple Worldline Theory into consideration, altering the past, even if your intentions are good, could make drastic changes to other aspects of life that aren't so good.

I'm sort of on the fence about MWT --- on one hand, it states that everytime you make a decision or time travel, you create a new universe. BUT, I am still not convinced that you cannot go back to your point of origin and choose which universe to travel to. This would make time travel very dangerous, because yes, people and aliens alike would be able to change our timelines. Some people, even some users here, have already experienced timeline changes. I just personally believe it's all about the math. "What equation are you talking about, Paula?" - Don't ask me. If I knew, I'd be famous.... but math defines everything, IMHO.

Simple. I call it "S-Convergence Theory".

Time Convergence Theory says that multiple timelines can be turned into one, by showing the same results.

Super-Convergence theory says that all timelines are interconnected, so, each time line are all the timelines infinitely, or that, maybe, all the timelines are just inside this timeline so time travel is theorical always being and, never by observing.

Convergence theory is absolutely true if time travelling between different time lines is true, and if S-TCT is real, time travel is anyways, always, ever. But, we won't know the true till we know the origin of the Universe.

If we are to time travel and change the past, i guess would rather go back to the dark ages and fix the things that happened there or maybe change the way the continuum happened. I want no war so change the past

Maybe someone did go back in time and did something different, and that's why things are screwed up today. Maybe this is not the world as it was meant to be. Maybe even one of us was not meant to be. How would we know?

In the Dragonball z Animie and manga it shows Future Trunks world which is destroyed mostly by the two androids 17 and 18, who were made to destroy and also without goku surviving the heart virus the others perish in battle with the androids easily. The only ones who survive are Gohan and Trunks, the androids are too strong and it is a game to them and pure evil to even fight so Trunks decides to come to the present timeline. This brings some changes, as he defeats frieza and, warns the others about the future and they train goku get's the heart virus medicine and survives the battle with the clumsy androids who are not the ones who are 17 and 18. So changes do occur, and the 17 and 18 ones are not awake yet but when they do, they are shown to not have any evil desires apart from fighting goku and don't harm the others even when they fight them as they have nicer personality but are shown to be stronger. So sometimes the future can be changed for the better and some other things can occur like in this scenario I talked about and maybe good or bad.

You already know the outcome. You're in the present and know about the past. With respect to whatever you might do in time traveling to the past you already know the results of what you did. It's imprinted in history.
If you didn't like how the past turned out and time traveled to the past to change history to something other than your recollection how is it possible that history doesn't record your change? If history does record your change why would you be motivated to time travel to the past to affect a change?

And what prevents one or an infinite number of other time travelers from constantly making changes to the same event?

Yep, and this is why time-travel to the past is not possible. We would already know it. Every point in history would have already been a battleground for groups from the future to try to manipulate things.

I think the evidence is right before your eyes. It looks like all knowledge that would have made time travel possible has been removed. Our science is based on theory instead of fact. The only thing the theory is used for is fantastic unverifiable stories.

It could be possible for scientists to invent something that could change our past or future. Almost anything is possible these days due to technological advances. But for me, maybe changing something out of our past would greatly affect our history both in a good and bad way. I'm hoping for the more positive effect though.

So your proof of time travel is our utter lack of being able to travel through time? Depending on who you ask, the entire history of mankind is hundreds of thousands of year.. yet we only have been able to fly for about 150 of them. We have only been able to communicate instantly over distances for about 100 years. Less than two hundred years ago, for me to tell you something in a different state required someone getting on a horse. 100 years ago, men were putting uranium in their underwear to improve libido.. we were selling uranium 50 years ago in home science kits for kids.
My point, science has exploded in the last 100 years, but that is a tiny amount of time and to think time travel should have happened already is a little far-reaching. Personally, I am one of those people who almost things the moon landing was faked solely because it is absolutely amazing that less than 100 years after first flying, we were able to fly to the moon and back using less computer power than my digital watch.
