Sorry folks, I didn't intend to leave anyone out of the conversation. I will hijack it though, begging Pamela's forgiveness after not asking permission.
I woke up from a dream envisioning what I thought was a nuclear bomb blast. As I laid there trying to return to sleep (unsuccessfully) I began to envision the things that led to that event...
Roll back to the start: Large space ship arrives with many scientists from the future. Might have been in Bloomington, Iowa. They call a press conference to announce the coming decimation of humanity from a cattle-based mutated virus. It took 300 years for science and technology to recover enough to tackle the problem. In the meantime, humanity had been decimated in such a way that it would never truly return to the prosperous civilization we have now. It was decided altering the past was the only way to proceed once everything about the disease was understood.
Cattle were rounded up en masse, and targeted with a fuel-air bomb; not nuclear like I thought but just as destructive to the target (minus the radiation). It was necessary to incinerate all beef and dairy cattle as any other form of destruction would spread the virus to more humans. All grazing lands were plowed under as cattle dung could spread the virus. Switchgrass was genetically modified to make a nutrient-rich food source for humanity. Fowl and fish were not affected, but all dairy and beef products were totally eliminated. Even with the changes to the timeline, most people carried the human-genome-altering virus. The future cure was distributed to minimize the suffering and loss experienced before. The early 21st Century was at a technological level capable of implementing the necessary changes. Other discoveries were also shared with the great minds of our time to advance humanity. Fuel sources, gene therapies and even the basic constructs of time-travel were made available. So-called "cattle mutilations" of the past were actually research for the future cure. Picture people in hazmat suits dissecting, discarding and decontaminating before returning home.
As all fiction is derivative, I give credit to John Titor's CJD (hi)story, the movie “12 Monkeys†(that probably inspired Titor), and many insomniaddict nights listening to Art Bell back in the day.
Non se(nce)quitur of that, I'd like to chip in on the "TimeTravel_0" and "John Titor" names. I mentally pronounce "Titor" as "Teetor" (sort of like teeter totter) because a preceding vowel (the "i") is typically pronounced long when followed by another vowel (the "o"). Darby's logic of shortening TimeTravel_0 making it "Tightor" makes sense too. If you believe John was a time traveler with knowledge of the future, you might surmise "Titor" was an allusion to Dennis Tito, the first "space tourist" (on April 28, 2001, about a month post-Titor). Being first may have been the reason for the underscore zero in TimeTravel_0. (like defining the first command in computer code). It could also reference the IBM 5100 APL and/or the so-called "2038 Unix time-out". "Titor" might also allude to "
Time
travel
or" with an implied question mark at the end. Does traveling to another dimension that happens to be experiencing a different year make it time travel? Or would it be more correctly labeled inter-dimensional travel? I know all of this has been debated for the last eleven years. The only thing I'm fairly certain is, Kaye and her fourteen or so year old son John are not named "Titor". Probably, those aren't their first names either. Damn social networks have made everyone a potential stalking target.
Good Days!
