Timeline travel?

Assuming the grandfather paradox is wrong and by going back in time and killing your own grandfather would create an alternate timeline. Can you then go back to your own timeline? How? Are we going to assume the traveling device (if it's machinery) is gonna have some sort of feature so you can jump around not just in time but in alternate timelines aswell?

Example: If you would go back in time and do something that would create an alternate timeline, going forward in time would not send you to the future of your timeline but to the future of the alternate timeline you just created.

im not a some scientist im a just first year IB learner in international high school. ok i was thinking about this and in some cases i agree whit you but in other cases i'm not. for example if we take your example. ye if you make some changes in past and back in future there will be changes. in this cases is thinkable that grandfather paradox is wrong in other words the theory of word-line(timeline) is wrong. but in some cases i don't believe that if you kill your grandfather and you will just disappear. here whit disappearing is more thinkable that those world-line(timeline) exist.
this is just my opinion and kind of comment for this post.

My thought on this could be that if you traveled to the future then you would be in a future that would be without you because you traveled into the future and there was no record of you between the time you left the timeline and the point in which you came into the future present. Or it could be just like in Back To the Future where life still went on and traveling to the future didn't affect anything. Meaning that you still lived normally as if traveling to the future you still lived a normal life in the meantime as if you traveled to the future and came back.

If you make a change and sit in that timeline, then yes, you will follow the newly spawned divergent. But, Rizefall, you do not want to travel back through time without a method of tracking back to your own timeline. For long term trips to before you were born, this is especially important to avoid getting stuck in widely alternate realities in which you are ill-prepared to survive. I shiver to think of the time-line in which Celine Dion was made Queen of the Canadian Empire. Think of your poor ears!

If you are thinking of a shorter trip to a time in which you exist, for example, last Thursday, you also have to deal with the problem of doubling up on yourself. I've had many arguments with myself about this.

to avoid the doubling up on yourself, it is possible to time travel mentally?, in other words to send your memories in past for ex. last Thursday. that is thinkable that you wont doubling your self.

If we assume (and it is a tenuous assumption - Everett's paper was brilliant but short and incomplete...not to mention not self-consistent) that a fundamental law of physics requires that whenever a "measurement" is made that alternate universes are created where each fulfills one possible outcome of the probability curve of the result of the measurement then there's no possible way to construct a device that negates the fundamental law. The measurement creates an array of alternate universes no matter what device is constructed. If you could somehow construct a device that negates that "law" then the law is falsified - it is not true that a measurement always creats alternate universes.

PS: "Measurement" and "observation" in quantum physics mean the same thing but the debate over the correct definition of what a measurement or observation is is ongoing. QM is extremely accurate but it may come to pass that it is an interim definition of reality and there is a deeper more fundamental set of physical laws that more precisely define reality. We believe this because general relativity is just as extremely accurate as QM but the two theories do not match when it comes to gravity. At the quantum level of subatomic particles gravity is ignored in QM because gravity is completely overwhelmed as a force strength by the EM, Strong and Weak forces present in the nucleus of atoms. The other forces, as compared to gravity, are multiple tens of orders stronger than gravity. Example: if gravity is set to equal "1" the EM and Strong forces are set to "10^38" with the Strong force 137 times greater than EM. Gravity is overwhelmed at that level yet it is still present and overall the most obvious force we observe on the macro scale.

I think that's just called remembering.

Assuming the grandfather paradox is wrong

It is wrong. You can't go back and kill your grandfather because all the events that happen before you were born must happen in order for you to be born. The Final Destination Principle is correct. It means there is both Predestination and Determinism. But Predestination that is tampered with becomes an angry beast that must correct the course of events. Predestination will find a way to kill you if it is your destiny to die. Predestination will find a way for you to live if you are destined to live.

But what if you CAN? If you believe in alternate timelines, going back in time and killing yourself, your grandfather, doing anything that would change your future an alternate timeline would be created. Your own timeline where you were born would still be intact but you just created another timeline where you wont be born so all the things you would do now wont happen in this timeline/world.

"However, a number of hypotheses have been postulated to avoid the grandfather paradox, such as the idea that the past is unchangeable, so the grandfather must have already survived the attempted killing or the time traveler creates - or joins - an alternate timeline or parallel universe in which the traveler was never born."

Time travel is very complicated and impossible to essentially pin down, so the author gets to make up their own rules for it whenever it comes up. I assume in all instances of going to the past to vary the current, the issue of the chance is always noted, or the story is therefore silly and camp that no one (least of all the writers and readers) are very involved with the potential consequences.

What you're saying is somewhat like the Donnie Darko principle of paradox, where when an object coexists in the same dimension, one of the dimensions becomes tangent or unstable, existing for only a short period of time until either it is stabilized by the object returning, or goes from existence. I don't like to believe in destiny.
