time travel is possible...here\'s how we know

i'm not sure exactly how good or bad of an idea this is or how original, but it is something that came up in discussion with some friends of mine and something that i have thought about and seems to make a lot of sense. i've read a few things about this on the web since the issue was brought to my attention, but here goes my theory on time travel.

aliens are not really aliens at all (assuming that they really do exist, which is something i have not yet seen, but something i firmly believe in)...they are simply the product of human evolution. these "aliens" become intellectually advanced to the point that they figure out the principles of time travel. thus, they travel in time and abduct humans for the sole purpose of understanding their history. Just as if we were to create a time travel machine today we would travel back and examine the life, which led to our creation. They don't tamper too much with their specimens for fear of changing history and, hence, the future. they respect our presence at this point in time just as we would today in the same circumstances. Why must these beings come from a different location when it is possible that they may just come from a different time. I do believe that other life forms do exist throughout the universe, but we are so miniscule in grand scheme of things that it would take a minor miracle for another race of beings to even come accross our solar system, let alone our planet. Also, an idea like this could explain that which generally goes unexplained as far as aberrations in the earth's history and records left in the form of fossils are concerned.

thank you for your time and your comments are welcome...feel free to bash my idea or embrace it, just give me feedback please. once again, thanks.

Re:time travel is possible...here\'s how we know

I was introduced to similar thoughts when I watched the movie 'Repo Man' (BTW this is a total classic -- THE movie of the 80's IMHO.)

In that movie, one character claimed that UFO's were really time machines used by people in the future to come back and abduct people from the present.

I got to thinking. Before, aliens were always classified as "little green men". If this is true, then it might be that future humans have evolved to become smaller, since this is more efficient (need less food and water to keep your weight and energy levels up.) Also, they may have somehow altered their DNA or developed some medical procedure to integrate chlorophyll under the skin. In this way they can get lots of energy just standing around in the sun! Being smaller and able to gather energy in simple ways may be adapations for space travel, time travel, or just dealing with a deteriorating environment.

These creepy little green men could be coming back as a form of nostalgia to see how beautiful humans once were.

Now it seems that everyone believes that aliens are "little gray men". Some people believe that if we finally shed ourselves completely of racism and multiracial marriages become a common occurance, that we will eventually all start to share physical characteristics, one of them being gray skin. So this could be good news that the future humans have completely eliminated racism, but they still are pretty creepy looking according to the pictures I've seen.

These, however, are just crazy theories.

I believe that if we ever develop time travel it will be far after we have unlocked most of the secrets of human DNA and artificial intelligence. So before we put someone (or something) into a time travel machine, humans will have changed significantly. Either we will all be highly genetically engineered, or we will have been replaced by silicon or gallium-arsenide based AI robots.

I believe that the last hurrah of the human race will be to try to genetically engineer themselves toward perfection in an ultimately losing race to keep up with AI robots. Eventually the robots will take over and either kill off the humans in self-defense or put them in "wildlife preserves" to keep them out of trouble. The AI robots might then completely redesign the surface of the earth to maximize its utility as a base of exploration into the universe. This could make the earth completely uninhabitable for all traditional forms of life.

Time travellers might be (like in Terminator) the few remaining humans trying to go back to a time when life on earth was more livable. In fact, it could be that a large percentage of the "beautiful people" that are so successful in life are actually these genetically perfected humans from the future who would rather be Kings and Queens in their past (our present) rather than artifacts in a zoo in a horrible future.

How else to explain Michael Jackson??

Theres just a "slight" problem with that theory. ::wry smile::

Theres only one problem with that as a person's color is more determed by the climate and levels of melatonian in your skin then anything else. For example, Blacks who have lived up North for several Generations tend to be of lighter skin color then Blacks who live along the Equater... {Even although they haven't crossed with a White person.}
And the same thing goes for the Whites who choose to live in South Africa, most of them tend to be of a slighter darker skin tone after, oh, lets say five generations, wheather or not they have any "Black" in them.

Of course, I could be wrong in this, but thats just what I heard, I'm sure that someone will correct me if I'm mistaken... ::winks::

Well, the problem with this idea is that thier knowledge of history would only be good until they stepped out of their time machine. Once out they would start changing the past and therefore the future, leaving thier knowledge of history as nothing more then a spotty guideline. Besides, why would the "machines" allow thier "pets" to roam about the one place where they could in theory destory them? Or, more to the point, cause them to never exist in the first place? (Oh, and on a side nore, while the First Terminator was a fairly good movie, and made me think that the author just "MIGHT" know something about time travel thoery, the second one was so far disjointed from the first and any theory I know of it wasn't even funny. After all, they never did address the many paradoxes left by the second film.)

But I'm starting to ramble so I think I'll shut up now. ::grins::

Just a couple of thoughts...

I of course agree with you on the paradoxes of time travel.

I think the "skin color" issue you present here is more urban legend than fact tho. Yes, we believe that skin color is due to environmental factors regarding sun exposure, but it takes many more than 5 generations for it to be significant. I believe the FOUNDTION of your statement is true, but I would want to see this evidence for skin lightening or darkening in the 5 generation time alloted here. As you say, you've heard this, but have seen no evidence directly. This is what I think would be the Urban Legend part.

Once we get into "interbreeding" discussions, we are really going out on a limb these days since DNA evidence is showing that what actually constitutes a "race" is becoming less and less clear. As yet, all humans are taxonomically classified as homo sapiens. DNA evidence is not giving any indication that we should do otherwise.

In my view, exactly what IS a "Black" Person, "White" Person, "Oriental" Person?

Well, you could stand a Somali next to Blonde Swede and say the difference is obvious, but it really is not as obvious as it seems on the surface. I'll lay you 8 to 5 the Somali has a "White" in his ancestory somewhere, and the Swede has a "Black" in hers. If we go far enough back in time, there is even no "racial" determination.

Current hominid paleobiology says we are all "out of Africa" anyway. Africa is EVERYBODY's Motherland.

Peace.

Re:Re:time travel is possible...here\'s how we know

Yeah, I've never been able to figure out why a Black guy would WANT to make himslef look like a White girl, but then who am I.

He MUST have been abducted by aliens.

Re:Re:time travel is possible...here\'s how we know

okay nolo...you've now proven that not only are you clever about the way you choose to make a mockery of someone, but you are also a movie buff as well. i liked the matrix reference though...funny shit. anyways, even if what i presented was a preconceived notion that was developed by a screen writer in hollywood and put on the big screen (eventhough i've never seen the movie and i'm not quite sure if it even made it to the big screen). but it seems like a perfectly logical idea to me. the fact is that society is progressing towards absolute knowledge even as we speak and there is no limit to the potential of the human mind. if time travel will ever happen, then it has already happened and they will be travelling back to see what happened in the past. So, basically, if you believe it is possible, then you just have to think at what stage in the evolutionary process we will be at. More than likely it will take tens if not hundreds of thousands of years to figure out the complexities of time travel, thus we will have evolved...whose to say into what, because there is an ever-changing universe around us and subtle changes in the world, which over the next couple of hundred years will force humans to adapt. then there is always the unexpected and what it may bring to our race. I've began to think that we are modern day bacteria that will eventually colonize other planets and, eventually, other solar systems and galaxies. Of course my thoughts on the situation are just as far-fetched as anyone elses, because who the hell knows what will really happen. in that respect everyone's opinion is as valid as the next's, so don't redicule my thoughts because you think you're intellectually superior to me. i'm not a well-read individual and, to be honest, i just heard the alien idea for the first time in my life less than a week ago. but the moral of the story is...respect everyone's thoughts, because you can learn from everyone in some way or another. each of us has some sort of contribution that we can make. anyways, sorry to take a little offense to the sarcastic piece you wrote in reply to my posting, but i am an intelligent person (although i am quite humble regarding the matter) and i didn't appreciate your sarcastic tone. the thoughts you've written on this page are a regurgitation of things you've heard in the past as well. you all just take things you've heard in scientific journals and make minor changes to the idea and present it in a different way. anyways, thanks for your time readers.

Re:Re:Re:time travel is possible...here\'s how we know

Sorry that I inadvertently offended you, with emphasis on the word "inadvertently". It is true that I am normally a very sarcastic individual, but if you look at all the other posts I have made on this particular site, I hope you noticed that I have kept my sarcasm relatively in check.

I threw out all the ideas I did not to try to ridicule you, but because I half-heartedly believe them all. And I was hoping for some response (especially to my idea about somehow integrating chlorophyll with human anatomy ... it is something that I have never heard anyone else mention before, and I think it might make some sense in some future where there is a lot more light than vegetation, i.e. we somehow go overboard on deforesting the planet and end up wandering in deserts.)

My major concern right now is that as a computer programmer I am just helping to advance the day when AI robots will eventually take over from humans. Why be part of an effort that ultimately ends in the demise of human kind? There are scientists today who are eagerly looking forward to this day, however. They can't wait until the day they can somehow transfer their consciousness to some metal box that could theoretically live forever, or like in Lawnmower Man roam around the internet with no body at all! Call me a bigot, but I prefer to remain in my primarily carbon-based container!

So I'm sorry if you took my response as ridicule. I was just trying to stir up some discussion.

P.S.: One of the problems with believing in time travel is that we supposedly have never seen a time traveller. Two answers to this are that no matter how important this particular time is to us, it might be relatively boring to people in the future. After all most of what we do is recorded in endless detail on CD's, tapes, etc. that will probably be transcribed successfully into the forseeable future. So there is no mystery. If I were a time traveller, I would much rather go back to a mysterious time such as ancient Egypt or King Arthur's Camelot. Merlin could have been a time traveller. It is also possible that all of the dwarves, elves, giants, trolls, spirits, gods, etc. that the ancients talk about in legend were actually an onslaught of time travellers.

One of the things mentioned in good detective novels, is that if you want to hide something so that noone will find it, then hide it in plain sight. So if there are time travellers who lower themselves to come back to our relatively boring and over-analyzed world, then maybe they are indeed "hiding in plain sight" by being celebrities. With all the knowledge they have of human psychology (gleaned from hundreds or thousands more years of study) it is no wonder that they are so hugely successful at making money, influencing people, and bagging the best babes!

P.P.S.: I'm still concerned about the logical problems of time-travel (i.e. going back in time and killing yourself when you were a baby, etc.) but I do believe that there is a way out. If our present is an ever-changing sum of all the effects of all the time-travel events, and that somehow all these time-travel events tend to sum up to cause our reality to hover around an equilibrium point, then we could have time travel and logical consistency. The only problem with my theory is that rather chaotic nature of changing events through time travel. Even changing one day of one person's life, may have drastic effects 10 or hundred years in the future. So our reality rather than moving toward a set of stable equilibria, would tend to swing violently from one extreme to the next.

I'm also concerned about the physical problems of getting back to WHERE the earth was if you go back in time. The earth moves VERRRY fast through the universe, and even if you could go back in time, you would have a tough time locating where the EARTH was and zipping off through space to get back there. Only if we could create designer wormholes where we could exactly control the space-time location at the other end could we overcome these problems.
