Time measurement

At the risk of sounding retarded, isn't time simply a measurement like meters and gallons? Aren't days and years based on Earth's position relative to the sun? If so, then time travel would be based on going to the Earth at a particular position relative to the sun but the Earth repeats the same positions so then how would time travel be possible?

You don't sound more retarded than anyone of us :-) I understand what you're trying to say, but time is what's being measured and the units are seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and so on.
