Whatever it's intended purpose is, has never been definitively determined. But from what I read, the gland will calcify up at an early age due to fluorine in the body. It is considered a vestigial gland.

I disagree that it is a vestigial gland. Your appendix is a vestigial gland. I'll have to do some reading on the fluorine calcification.
 
The Pineal Gland has more to do with visceral and emotive responses than with time traveling, however, many argue that the gland was capable of allowing people to develop psychic powers, specially the precognitive sort.
