Stump the imposters

From what I see all wild 'time travel' claims are imposters, bandwagon titorites, I think I may have found a decent way to stump the imposters.

Ask them questions that would cause them to waste too much time for them to bother, pop-culture type questions, specificially music..

The question I have is, what are the top 10 pop artists, and what are the lyrics for the top 10 songs? Obviously anyone could make up names and lyrics, but it would be so time consuming to make a decent song that they would probably dodge the question. Obvious fakes would say everyone listens to classic hits from our era. Or if they were creative they might actually write some horrible stuff and claim all music is like that. A true time traveler exposed to future music, rap, rock, whatever, could easily remember that information without much delay. I know I could answer the question easily if I was transported into the past.

If anything, the imposter could be a source of ideas to rip off.

Raz,

Good thought but Titor's answer to a similar question was something along the lines of, "So, what? You think that I brought the latest edition of Rolling Stone Magazine along with me?"

I suppose that you could ask an easy question for a time traveler who had at least some basic math skills. It would eliminate the lamest of hoaxers.

Maybe ask him/her to analyze:

If f(x) = 5X^5 + 3X^2 + 10,

f'(x) = ?

I wouldn't need any magazine to list the top bands and songs, on the other hand I am not very good with math so I wouldn't be able to anser a math question. But if they weren't into music, there would have to be something they couldn't easily dodge, common designs couldn't be foreign to them a typical car, robot, aircraft etc. The idea would be to force them to invent something that doesn't exist if they were a fraud. But it would be much easier to make up ideas compared to something specific, I guess you're right, math would be the best tool.

I think its all to obvious that no real time traveller would openly admit to being a traveller in a forum.

You be better off looking in fan fiction for TT's, Also any rather abstract posts on the main section. I think any TT worth their salt would not plaster "i'm a time traveller" all over a webpage. Anyone that claims otherwise is on a deluded ego trip.

Kind regards,
Olly

P.S. I cant bite my lip any longer, you damn yanks
its 'Maths' not 'math' do you learn mathematics or mathematic?

Brit' rant over.

pah!

newbie,

Very good. Correct answer.

f""(x) =

Nah...you know that answer too. Just don't give away the quick and dirty method to get the solution. We might want to use it someday as an easy TT eliminator.

Olly, heheh... yea I notice maths is an Old World term, here in the US we say 'math'.
Do you have a British spellchecker?

raz,

lol

no, to be honest English people embrace the 'Americanisms', The US seems intent on changing english language, the English seem to follow suit and copy the words and generally don't really care.

Did you know 'side-walk' and 'couch' are pretty much the norm over here now.

however, 'Math' (and that other word you sued for 'taps') is two of those words that will never make it back over here in its American format. how we scowl and bitch at your 'math' and 'fossets' or however you spell it?

to take our minds off it, we think about how America is really just another Britain that we started creating long ago.

Therefore we OWN you, or something like that anyway...etc etc.

kind regards,
Olly.

Olly,

We Americans do truly owe our culture to England. And the maths, as you know, we also owe to England...at least The Calculus. Though we call the 20th Century the American Century, lest we forget, the sun truly never set on Great Britain in the 19th Century.

With a name like Darbyshire (actually Derbyshire - the American Customs Officers couldn't spell
) I owe my personal heritage to England.

Though we've fought two wars against each other in the end, as brothers and sisters, only two nations on the planet have had the courage to stand up consistently against tyranny. England and America.

God save the Queen and Prime Minister. And God save the President. On Christmas Eve may God keep our soldiers safe from harm in lands far away.

Rainman,

Yikes! ODE's are enough for me. And should be enough for a would-be time traveler. /ttiforum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Or if they were creative they might actually write some horrible stuff and claim all music is like that.

And how are you planning to distinguish horrible stuff written my an imposter from horrible stuff which are actually top hits from the future?

What would an 18th century person think of the Beatles? The music of Gustav Mahler? A painting by Picasso? He would, in all probability, regard them as complete crap.

I have no idea how 23rd century music will sound like, but I'm quite sure that no 21st century person would be able to appreciate such music.
