Space/Time theory

Greetings,

New user here. Can someone explain in simple terms how the light speed traveler's time changes, relitive to someone standing on earth?

As far as this layman can determine is that the space (or length from point A to point B) shortens if you reach it sooner, since time/space are linked. However, as one stands on earth watching the traveler, the distance is the same, thus appears from that point that the traveler reaches their destination at the time, no matter the speed. Do I have something here, or if not, please explain.
