Correct. It means (loosely) "bloody" in both Spanish and Italian. In English the proper word would be sanguine.
In Titor's story the email addy [email protected] is a continuation of his story about his favorite fruit and what his father did for a living after the nuclear war. Oranges (favorite fruit) and orange monger (dad's job). It's also an allegorical reference to the "bloody war". The blood orange is called a "sanguinella" or "sanguina".
In "Alas, Babylon" the main character, Randy Bragg, had both characteristics. Oranges was his favorite fruit and after the nuclear war he was also an orange monger (because, like Titor's dad's, his orange orchard survived the war).
As a side note, Randy Bragg's brother, LtCol Mark Bragg, USAF, dies in the nuclear attack on Omaha, NB. Young Ben Franklin is the 11 year old boy who is given a shotgun and recruited into Randy Bragg's local Florida shotgun militia.
