WASHINGTON -- Lawmakers plan to question six U.S. attorneys who were dismissed from their posts as the Democratic-led Congress holds hearings Tuesday on whether the Bush administration played politics in firing federal prosecutors.
A congressional watchdog group called Monday for a Senate ethics investigation of Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) for allegedly interfering with the work of the U.S. attorney in his state, which would be a violation of Senate rules.
The Justice Department disclosed that Domenici made four phone calls over the past two years to Atty. Gen. Alberto Gonzales and his deputy to complain about the U.S. attorney in New Mexico, David Iglesias.
Eight federal prosecutors were fired last year, seven of them by phone on Dec. 7. Six of the eight are being subpoenaed for the hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee and a House Judiciary subcommittee.
Democrats contend the prosecutors were fired for political reasons. But the Republican administration has said it has the authority to make personnel changes it deems appropriate, without congressional interference. Officials deny that politics was behind the firings.
