Dell Opens New Contact Center in India

GURGAON, India (September 8, 2006) — The contact center in Gurgaon is expected to add 700 to 1,000 positions to Dell’s India employment of 10,000.


Dell announced that the company is expanding its operations in India by setting up its fourth customer contact center here.

Dell has customer contact centers in the Indian cities of Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mohali that are part of a 30-site global customer contact network.

The contact center in Gurgaon is expected to add 700 to 1,000 positions to Dell’s India employment of 10,000. The company expects to be in a 250,000 square foot built-to-suit location by the end of the year.

Since establishing its first customer contact center in India at Bangalore in 2001, the company’s teams in India have pioneered processes and practices for technical support, call planning and staffing, and provide frontline support to Dell customers around the world, regardless of product, time or location, according to the company. India is the only country in Dell’s customer contact network that supports customers in all geographic regions.

“Our teams in India have integrated well with Dell’s global operations,” Kevin Rollins, CEO of Dell. “As we continue to attract new customers the world over, we have successfully expanded our global service network and our talented team in India has played a key role.”

Rollins also said the company plans to double the size of its India-based product development team during the next two years based on its success in supporting the company’s enterprise systems, a strategic product area for Dell.

(Jan. 29, 2007) - BANGALORE - Accenture plans to raise its staff numbers in India by 30 percent to 35,000 by August, overtaking the United States as its biggest employment hub, said Chief Executive William Green.

The expansion underscores India's growing importance as a destination for outsourcing.

Accenture currently employs 27,000 people in India, spread across six cities: Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, which account for about 19 percent of its global workforce.

It has about 30,000 employees in the United States."At 35,000 people at the end of our fiscal year, India will become the largest country for Accenture, passing the United States," Green told reporters.

(Reuters) - Consulting firm Accenture Ltd. said on Thursday that it has agreed to buy privately held NaviSys, which develops and sells software programs to life insurers in North America.

Financial terms were not disclosed, though Accenture said it expects the deal to close within 60 days.
NaviSys' customers include 17 of the top 20 U.S. life insurers, Accenture said.

IBM said on Wednesday it is setting up a new "Global Business Solution Centre" in Bangalore, which will develop a range of high-value solutions through its global network of delivery centres.

The Bangalore centre will allow IBM consultants to develop and deploy solutions in over 50 key business areas, an IBM statement said.

"With the Global Business Solutions Centre, IBM will create and enhance a portfolio of replicable industry solutions that are developed by combining the strengths of IBM’s business consulting, research, software, systems, engineering, and emerging technologies. These new solutions

will be built-based on IBM’s Services Oriented Architecture methodology, and in collaboration with IBM clients and business partners," the statement said. "At the Global Business Solutions Centre, IBM is embedding a range of high-value capabilities such as consulting, research, and emerging technologies, into easily managed reusable tools that can be delivered globally," it quoted Amitabh Ray, director of global delivery, IBM India, as saying.

According to the release, one example of a solution being enhanced at the centre is the IBM Dynamic Inventory Optimisation solution that is designed to enable an organisation to better manage its supply chain. "Currently, German home improvement retailer, Max Bahr, is using this solution to obtain real-time inventory data in order to forecast demand and to support optimal stock levels of products are on-hand for customers. By leveraging the Global Business Solution Centre as a development resource, rapid and timely enhancements to the solution can be made to drive even higher value for the user," it said.

SAN FRANCISCO — Silicon Valley is in danger of creating its own digital divide.

The California region is losing its middle-class work force at a significant rate, according to an annual report that tracks the economic, social and environmental health of the region that is the nation’s technology heartland.

The 2008 Index of Silicon Valley — which this year was sponsored by Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, a public-private partnership, and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, a nonprofit — found that from 2002 to 2006, middle-wage jobs fell to 46 percent of the work force, from 52 percent.

At the same time, while the percentage of higher-end jobs rose slightly — to 27 percent from 26 — lower-wage jobs expanded to 27 percent, from 22 percent of the work force. In all, more than 50,000 middle-income jobs have disappeared over the four years measured by the study.

The vanishing jobs — defined as those paying $30,000 to $80,000 — represent workers who had been in the lower part of the white-collar pyramid, including secretaries, clerks and customer support representatives. The picture was blurred, however, by growth in some blue-collar, middle-income professions like electricians and plumbers, and several white-collar areas like computer support technicians.

The consequence of the shift may undercut some of the basic mechanisms of the Valley economy, according to the authors of the report, by making upward mobility more difficult.

“If you lose the middle, it’s harder to support the top,” said Doug Henton, an economist at Collaborative Economics, a research and consulting firm in Mountain View, Calif., that helps prepare the annual report.

The short-range outlook for the region appears to be more positive, with the overall pace of job gains outpacing the nation’s.

For example, for the first time since 2001, when the dot-com sector was imploding, median household income rose. Silicon Valley added 28,000 jobs, for an increase of 1.7 percent in 2007. Over all, the region is far more wealthy than the rest of the country, with per capita income 57 percent higher than the national average.

Despite fears of losses in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, the region continues to see a healthy in-flow of talent from outside the United States. More than 17,000 foreign citizens moved to the region last year, reversing a decline since the number peaked in 2001 at above 30,000.

Forty-eight percent of the households of the region speak a language other than English in the home.

Reflecting the changing boundaries of what is defined as Silicon Valley, this year the authors of the report added all of San Mateo County’s work force. It was the first change to the definition of the region by the study, which was first published in 1995. By moving the northern border of the Valley past the San Francisco airport, the area now reflects more of the biotechnology orientation of companies like Genentech. The region does not include San Francisco.

Venture capital investment continued to climb at a healthy clip during 2007, rising by 11 percent. Sixty-two percent of the so-called clean tech venture investment for California was invested in Silicon Valley during the year.

The Valley continues to stand apart because it is a center of technical innovation, said Russell Hancock, president of Joint Venture. But he also said it was unlikely that the region would be unaffected by a recession or the subprime mortgage crisis.

Still, the researchers behind the study said the Valley was distinguished by the flexibility of its economy and its ability to adapt to changing conditions.

“What we’re talking about is a Valley that continues to reinvent itself, and it’s not in any one sector,” Mr. Henton said.

One notable category in which the region lags behind its international competitors is home broadband networks. Only 51 percent of the region has access to broadband Internet — defined as more than 200 kilobits per second. In contrast, 65 percent of the households in Japan and 94 percent in South Korea are wired to at least that speed.

(Reuters) - Dell Inc is trying to sell computer factories around the world in efforts to cut cost and improve profitability, the Wall Street Journal said.

In recent months, Dell has approached contract computer manufacturers with offers to sell the plants, the paper said, citing people familiar with the matter.

One person briefed on the plan told the Journal that he expects Dell to sell most, possibly all, of its factories "within the next 18 months".

The most likely buyers of Dell's factories will be big contract manufacturers, most of which are based in Asia, the paper said.

Dell's factories were originally tailored for a PC market that was driven by corporate customers ordering large volumes of desktop PCs.

But over the past three years, growth has shifted to laptops sold to consumers at retail stores. Round Rock, Texas-based Dell has lagged behind competitors in coming up with a streamlined system to build portable PCs.

Dell could face several obstacles in selling its plants. Contract manufacturers may be hesitant to buy factories in places with high labor costs, like the United States, a person with knowledge of the talks told the Journal.

And some facilities could be encumbered by agreements with local governments. Dell's North Carolina plant, for example, received several million dollars of state and local tax incentives that are contingent on the factory meeting certain employment and local-investment goals by 2015.

Though Dell's plants are still regarded as efficient at churning out desktop PCs, within the industry, company-owned factories aren't considered the least expensive way to produce laptops.

Contract manufacturers can generally produce computers for less money because their entire operations are narrowly focused on finding efficiencies in manufacturing, as opposed to large firms like Dell, which must balance marketing and other considerations.

No one was available at Dell for immediate comment.

When it comes to business there is no such thing as boarders except where laws and restrictions are concerned. There is no such thing as loyalty to one individual or group it is about the greater whole. There is no such thing as loyalty to a specific economy or country. There is no such thing as loyalty to a specific government unless that government can pass laws to undermine the bottom line which is profit. At the end of the day it is about money to the people who own the company and about getting control or power within the company. Everybody and everything else is un-important. Gone are the days of the average person getting a good paying job for a life time and in their old age retirement. Some still do it but those are the more educated upper class professional career minded individuals. Not for the average Joe out of high school who wants to get married, settle down, and start a family and is unconcerned with a professional career. It takes both a wife and a husband working for most people to survive now days and jobs come and go. People who can get a good job and keep it are better off but sooner or later any job on a daily bases is subject to go when it can be replaced because companies don,t want to spend money they want to make money. Cutting Joe's job or moving that job to another country where it can be done cheaper is always good business. As for the trading indexes they have their own rules and regulations about what companies can or can not be listed and they have their procedures for listing or not listing those companies.
