Opinions wanted....

Hi folks just wanting people's opinions on how you think people react to something that they know is unusual or out of place.....to be specific if they came across a "Prochronism" which is an object from the future in the wrong time.
I think most people try to rationalize the unusual and make it fit into their "world view"..for instance someone who was a believer in aliens would see it as proof of an alien artifact ....conspiracy theorists would see it as something backing up their theories...and so on.
When they can't make it fit their world view what happens then? A certain percentage will go into denial or just ignore it. Any other options I haven't thought of?

Just after general thoughts here....I am NOT after people's views on aliens or conspiracies I am after people's opinions on how they react to something strange ....folks on here I would imagine are flexible in their thinking! :rolleyes:

I personally try to consider all the options in order to understand correctly the concept/phenomenon at hand. I don't expect everybody to actually do that. Considering crazy, out of the box options doesn't mean you have to believe in them.

Like you suggest, a lot of people will just ignore or completely deny it. Say it's BS, fake, etc. A lot of folks out there are so comfortable with their view of what they believe reality to be, that they'll never allow anything to alter that view. They prefer to enjoy comfortable illusions rather than face the hard truths.

Thanks Numenorean....I believe that would help to conceal time travellers who are hiding out trying to stay under the wire..people see what they want to see...that will be an element of my novel

vodkafan;
It would be hard to determine that an "out of place" object is something from "the future" verses just something the observer is unfamiliar with. In your novel you can establish that fact with the story-line but, in reality, there is not 'as easy' a way to validate that.
So my reaction to such an object would be "it's something I don't know about, yet, (and there are a lot of such things out there) so let's see what it is."

Thanks Gpa yes that's a good answer. I think a certain percentage of people with enquiring minds would react like that.
I think it is also a factor whether the person is familiar with a certain level of technology too. For instance:
A mid 19th century person from 1850 would be familiar with the concept of a train. Even if he saw a train from 150 years in the future run by electricity instead of steam, he would be able to reason that it runs on tracks, it has seats and windows = train.
But go back another 150 years and take a person from 1700 and show him either the steam train or the electric train and he would be awed, unable to comprehend, perhaps scared. Unless he was Leonardo da Vinci.
