Here's an excellent idea for a new time travel fraud.

Claim to be someone from the past!

That's right, pretend to be from the early twentieth century!

There are many advantages to this.

1. easy to find old records and photographs and pretend they are of you.
2. nostalgia for early days makes people more forgiving.
3. tiny details you make up will be supported by at least one typical historian somewhere and give you an aura of credibility
4. faking a physical time machine is much easier
5. finding obscure period documents and papers is easier than trying to fake the future
6. it will capture people's imagination and send them off on wild goose chases to frontier towns
7. it's easier to fake old manners and speech than use kewl sp33k from the the spodule of 3001 CE or whatever.

Just a thought.

But note this post, it won't be long before some kiddie copies this idea and begins to plague us. Should be fun.

It has been done here already. At least twice. The problem was it was done poorly in both cases (that I recall), mostly because the people trying it did a really lousy job of researching the time and place they claimed to come from. I mean REALLY lousy.

There is an inherent paradox in claiming to come from the past and posting your story on the internet. I confronted the last TTer from the past with this paradox: How did you learn how to use a computer?

Never heard back after that question! :D

Proof that the people who run ATS still troll around here looking for story ideas - ie things to make up a fake user and then post over at ATS:

What do you know, a time travel story... Correcting some of the mistakes the Titor hoaxers made, and even incorporating a touch of the "time traveller from the past" thing with the dead grandfather handing stuff over.

The fake book there is so pathetic- the burnt page edges etc. on a book in a chest (? did they roast marshmallows in the chest or something?) but watch people get sucked in. Especially at ATS- where critical thought is unwelcome and shills are free to proselytise.

See what else he is into.

Take a guess he is from California AND Portugal.....

this part is very interesting...

quoted Da Manual:
"sound of Thunder" based choas theory is incorrect.
Nature Will compensate. The death of a butterfly will no change anything.
Time will compensate
...
end quoted. /ttiforum/images/graemlins/devil.gif

I mean... The hoax... So bad... Broken "Engrish"... Insanity...

People lapping it up on ATS (of course)...

What the hell kind of civilisation is this turning into??

Can even the conintelpro types and the media etc. be pleased with this? Surely we can do better than this!

Good lord.

Or is it?

Plato's Republic seems to be the inspiration or at least the "cover" for an awful lot of modern cryptofascism, and outright militarism. Not to mention that the Platonic ideals and eidolons come in for regular plagiarism by every kind of borderline personality channelling messages or "believing in" time travellers.

Man.
