Nicola Tesla

A huge amount has been written about the prodigal genius of Nikola Tesla (maybe more even than on JFK, to whom we also pay Tribute), and so there may not be a great need to say more here about his life, his brilliance, his vision, and his achievements. But in brief, Tesla was an extraordinary, intuitive, creative genius who, among a great deal else, invented alternating current (which powers the the modern world) and radio (for which Marconi is often falsely given credit). Contemporary biographers of Tesla have deemed him "the father of physics", "the man who invented the twentieth century", and "the patron saint of modern electricity".

Much of his life's work was about providing for the world free (i.e. zero-cost) energy, which Tesla envisaged would be broadcast wirelessly through the air or through the Earth itself with no need for powerlines - but despite years of trying, he never obtained the funding to achieve this, one of his dreams. It has long since been rumored that he invented or developed a significant number of electrical and electronic devices which were decades ahead of their time and would have been of special interest to US military and intelligence circles. Around 300 patents were issues to Tesla in 25 countries, many of them major and

recall,

It's ironic, isn't it, that if Tesla was alive today and wanted to broadcast energy in sufficient density that it was useable for something other than radio signal transmission he'd spend twnety or more years (in the US at least) just trying to get through the Enviornmental Impact Report process. The US EPA and the EPA of every state through which his radiation would pass or might pass would require EIR's. He'd have to convince at least 51 governments that his energy plan didn't cause cancer, didn't disturb frogs, owls, elk, deer, bears, or field mice, damage trees, drown polar bears, cause the polar ice caps to melt, have a carbon footprint, cause sleep disorders, alcoholism, drug addiction, early childhood learning disorders, AIDS, was trans-fat free, had a calorie count included, included a twenty page list of deadly or not-so-deadly-but-otherwise-harmful side effects (real, imagined, or "just because"), as well as public hearings in the House, Senate, every state, city, village and tent...and on and on and on.

Once he got through the EIR process he'd have to start over once again - this time with the local building permit process at every site and in every jurisdiction that he planned to build his facilities. More impact reports and more public hearings.

And when he tried to break ground - assuming he was permitted to break ground - he'd spend years waiting for the protesters to go away and let him get to it.

His erstwhile "free" energy would cost him 10's of millions of dollars before he got a single plan off the drawing board and to engineers to design the infra-structure. He'd end up building it in the PRC.

My simple quick honest question is. Would it have worked? That is all I would like to know for sure. From my understanding everyone would still have to receive that power transmission then put it to a power line to power outlets where power supplies would of transformed it to our normal devices. But, would it have worked without killing people?

Well, the sun has managed to do it 24-7/365 for the past 4 billion years. So transmitting EM energy wirelessly is possible. We do it every day with AM-FM-SW radio and TV.

But wirelessly transmitting manmade EM energy to light and power a town is another matter. The energy disperses in a sphere when you transmit it. If you're 100 km from the source and you want to cover an angle of 1 degree of the y-z axes of the field your receiver would have to be 1.745 kilometers high and 1.745 km wide, or 3.04 sq/km

100 km * Tan(.017453) = ~1.745 km.
1.745^2 ~= 3.04 km/sq
1 degree = .017453 radians.

But 3.04km/sq is only 1/41,246ths of the area of the sphere at 100 km.

A = PI * d^2 = 3.14 * 200^2 = 125,663 sq/km area of the sphere.

125,663/3.04 = 41,246

If you are transmitting 100 kw at the source your only receiving a maximum of 2.4w over then entire receiver.

41,246/100,000 watts = 2.4 watts

I don't think that you're going to light a town, or even a single toaster with 2.4 watts. And you'd only extract this power if every component in the receiver was 100% efficient, i.e. could violate a few thermo and electrodynamic laws.

I love Tesla stories. In fact I once downloaded a huge torrent of his patents in PDF format and spent weeks reading them, only to find out that he used to file his patents in three parts so his work could not be stolen. Even then he would exclude certain crucial details because he was rumored to have the ability to functionally experiment in his head... e.g. rather than fabricate components and experiment in a lab setting, he had the ability to do all of the above virtually in his head. Allegedly only after he conducted the experiments virtually would he conduct them in reality.

Check out his theories on the electrostatic field, or what is now called the quantum vacuum flux. I believe this is what he based his free energy transmission theories off, however I have also heard he intended to use the auroral electrojet to inject huge amount of power at a specific frequency using a pulse in order to highly charge the electrojet, then the power could be extracted using a receiver from anywhere in the world without metering which would form a circuit between the natural ground and the electrojet at the same frequency of the injected power. You could see where Tesla was his own worst enemy by announcing this to the robber barons of the time especially the part about not being able to meter it. He should have consulted Dr Emmett Brown of back tot he future fame, he would have had Tesla sell Morgan a shoddy meter casing full of old pinball machine parts /ttiforum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just like all smart people Tesla appears to lack common sense in dealing with people, but he seems to have been brilliant and very well intentioned man.
