If a time machine were built today, you would only be able to go back as far as that day. So the claims that people are time traveling would mean that we have already built a time machine. Which, by a time machine being built, the entire future would happen instantaneously because time would no longer be linear.

Unless:

The time machines of the future are natural ones, and are billions of years old.

-or-

A new mode of time travel, unknown to 2007 science, enables future time traveller to bypass this restriction.
