I havent seen the film myself. It wasnt such a big hit over here.
But i think that you are refering to the steven gibbs unit. From what i understand, the movie prop is intended to refer to it too. one of the actors needed a time machine to put in the film for a joke. He searched the internet and saw the gibbs model on futureHorizons, i think. And it was used in the film.
The HDR is a pretty crude radionic circuit. I wouldnt expect you to meet much favour in talking about his unit with others. Not unless they had a deeper understanding in metaphysics, thats not entirely related to the radionic unit itself.
Even gibbs cannot get right how and why it has the potential to work. Mainly because he tries to explain it via his own beliefs which are based on biblical religion.
