Part 1
I have experienced my things while meditating, I warn anyone who dives into the deep realms. if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you, Nietzsche.
I do not know how to explain it, I believe one can align with other versions of yourself being good, bad, future, or past.
The first step is find a nice safe peaceful place (trees, wilderness...) - next imagining yourself Dead of natural causes - you have given your last breath and you lay on the floor lifeless. Look at yourself understand this will be you one day and until you can accept this, absorb this idea, live this idea, reflect this idea, and let go... do not move forward.
Once you have let go and you are at peace with your life, ( if you feel a grasp because of kids, or other unresolved issues - please imagine your kids grown and happy or the issues resolved in your mind with the actions that solve them) begin meditation (part 2).
