Is It Ever Possible for Two Events in a Person\'s Life to Be Connected by a Line That Deviates More Than 45 Degrees from the Vertical Time Axis?

Hi:

Sorry if the following questions sort of overlap with some of my older questions, but I figured that if I didn't repost in a new category, I might never get them answered. Anyway...

Assuming NONCURVED spacetime, is it ever possible for two events in a person's life to be connected by a line that tilts more than plus or minus 45 degrees from the vertical t-axis on a 3-D (2-D space, 1-D time) spacetime digram?

Also, would it be possible for another party (even a single particle would suffice) to converge with these two events and have a line that ever tilted more than 45 degrees from the vertical t-axis?

Thanks!

First of all, I think we should clarify for the viewing public reading these posts, how these lines can be identified and what they have to do with events? I think it’s kinda rude to just assume that everybody knows the background of whatever it is someone is talking about.

It kinda puts an overwhelming monopolyic spin on topics where it’s difficult for someone to just jump in and post their thoughts.

RTT,

Hmmm...as to particles I suppose that the mythical tachyon could intersect two events with a declination greater than 45 degrees or less than 315 degrees.

In the sense of flat spacetime I'll assume that you might mean an area of spacetime far distant from a gravitational field and covering only very short distances. Virtual particle/anti-particle pairs (which also have the charcteristic of mass/anti-mass - see Hawking Radiation) could also so interact. They would be gone before they could be detected and would leave absolutely no trace of their existence. They are free to interact in just about any manner imaginable.

Massive objects are not free to interact in this way...they are prevented from having super-luminal velocities.

In the Lorentz Transformations you always end up bumping up against:

1-sqrt(v^2/c^2)...you end up with an imaginary squareroot when v > c.

I used the simplified partial formula for the Lorentz Transformation becuase you proposed flat (gravity free) spacetime (i.e. Special Relativity).

RTT,

BTW...because this is a TT board...

If you happen to be able to time travel then all bets are off. Your timeline trace through spacetime could reach any region of any light cone...that's the theory, anyway.

I'll have to assume that the mode of transport is by means other than super-luminal velocity. Unless the Lorentz Transformations are completely wrong (and it appears from many years of validation that they are not) FTL travel for massive bodies is not possible...that darned photon will always be out front of you receding at "c" relative to your point of view (inertial frame).
