Hello from the past. The very near past that is, in fact it is so near that I could just say "hello, from the present." But that seems kinda anti climatic. So I will just say "the past" ok?
Anyway, as you have probably figured out by now, I am a time traveler. I have traveled here from about 3 minutes ago(actually the entire event took place several hours ago). Now I know what you are thinking. You are wondering why a time traveler would choose such a small amount of time to travel through. Surely years, or decades, or even centuries would be far more impressive. But only 3 minutes? C'mon! Well, please allow me to explain.
I will just come out and tell the entire story, then I can answer any questions that you may have.
It began this morning when I awoke from a strange dream.(well not that strange really as all dreams are kinda strange) In my dream I had time traveled into future. Now I can't remember what the future was like or anything because the only part of the dream that I remember is me thinking "so here I am, in the future". This dream got me thinking about time travel and if such a thing is truley possible.
Just as I was thinking that I could probably build a time machine, I suddenly hear a "pop" sound and a "whoosh" in the next room. I go to investigate and there is what is presumably my time machine. I didn't know for sure that that is what it was, but I figured that probability of it being anything else was slim. But given the events of this day, no particular event, no matter how improbable, would suprise me.
I wondered for a moment if I was about to see some other version of myself exit the machine. After a minute or two I decided that the machine must be empty, so I might as well climb in and check it out. I intuitively understood how how to open the machine and use its controls, I figured that must be because I built it myself at some later time.
I started to get real excited! I was anxious to go somewhere, or I should say "somewhen". For safety reasons I decided to limit my travel to today +-100 years(2107-1907). This would be my first trip and I didn't want to take unacceptable risk. I also decided to travel to this same day April 17th, in which ever year I chose. This was because I am lazy and didn't want to come up with a method for choosing a day of the year at random. To determine which year, I first flipped a coin to determine the first value of the four digit year. Heads was one, tails was two. It landed on tails. So I would go to some year after 1999. Excellent.
To stay within the parameters I set before I would flip a coin again to get the second digit of four in the year. Heads was one again, and tails was zero. If heads came up, then it would be the 22nd century sometime between 2100 and 2107, if tails came up it would be some time between 2000 and 2099. I flipped the coin and it was tails. So my destination date up to that point was 20XX.
For the next two digits I would not be able to rely on a coin toss, so I used a 10 sided die instead. So I rolled the die and it landed on zero. Humm... I was a little disappointed because that meant that my time travel would be limited to this decade. But then I thought it may be for the best. After all, I will be more familar with a closer date so I will be less likely to have problems.
Ok, it came time for the final roll. I begain to imagine what it would be like, would I go back to pre-9/11? How strange would it seem to me now? Or would I go foward and see who wins the 2008 election? I was getting really excited now! So I rolled the die and it landed on.........seven. Humm..... Maybe I should have rolled again. But after I got to thinking about it, I decided that traveling a short distance on my first trip would probably be the best course of action, maybe the rolls coming out the way they did was God's or Nature's way of protecting me from myself. Or maybe it was just pure dumb luck.
I climbed into the machine. I look at the control panel and knew immediately how to use it. I decided to make my first trip a test run of a short distance of time and I decided on 3 minutes into the future just to be safe. I activated the machine and with a pop and whoosh I was here, in the future! I climbed out of the machine and looked at the DVD player clock. It was blinking 12:00 because I have never set it. So I looked at the wall clock and sure enough I was about 3 minutes in the future.
Now I wondered if I should bother with traveling back. After all I would only "lose" three minutes or so if I didn't go back, and if I did back I could cause some wierd paradox or something. I knew that the choice was obvious, don't go back! But I couldn't resist the urge to think about it. What if I did meet my younger self? What would really happen? My curiosity was killing me. I set the controls back to when I estimate that I first saw the machine. My heart was pounding! Surely I was not about to try something so foolhardy. I was insane. I don't know why I even considered it. But I decided to do it. I started the squence and then, in fit of panic, I realized just how dangerous this was. What if this version of the time machine occupies the same space and time of the "original"?! Oh my God! It could be a disaster! At the last moment I jumped through the entrance of the machine right before the door closed. In an instant the machine disappeared with its usual poof and whoosh.
After I calmed down a bit I realized what happened. I had just sent the machine back to point where I first encountered it. The loop is complete. But where did come from to begin with? Will I eventually build it? I guess I must because it could not have come from nowhere. But I know that the version that I first encountered this morning was the same machine that I sent back in time later this morning. /ttiforum/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ttiforum/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ttiforum/images/graemlins/confused.gif
