Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said his office - at the behest of the federal Department of Homeland Security - is creating a Rapid Deployment Force that will be trained to respond, within the county, to any threats.
"And that could include anything from possible terrorist activity to any sort of natural disaster or civil disturbance," DeFazio said.
DeFazio said each police department is being asked to assign 5 percent of its force to the new unit.
"Right now, we're looking for volunteers," he said. "We're asking people to make a three-year commitment to the unit. People who do sign up will be screened to see if they're physically up to it."
When the unit is formed and ready to operate, its members will wear distinctive uniforms identifying them as the Rapid Deployment Force, DeFazio said.
