Temporal Novice
Hi People,
new 'ere, so I thought I'd lay my views on the table, I've been fascinated by this concept of time travel for years, ever since I watched my first episode of Dr Who (from behind the sofa!)
I think I have found a flaw in the theory and I'd like for people to hear my views.
Theory: Time travel is possible, but only one way.
it could be possible to go back in time and see your ancestors but seeing as the universe is made up of cause and effect then it would only be a one way trip if it was done in person (i.e. the person actually came to exist in that time frame) because with out a VERY extensive map of the timeline that you came down you couldn't possibly know which changes had to be made inorder for you to return to the present.
If you think of the old bullet hitting the plane you get the old ----|< fracture effect where reality becomes split into alternate universes, without knowing which of those branches you came down, you wouldn't be able to return back up it, and when you consider that there could be thousands of fractured lines like I said you would need a very good map. Not to mention the fact that just you being there could spark off a whole new set of fractures.
The only way I can see that Time "Travel" would be possible would be similar to the device that was used in a book I read called the practice effect (very good read if you like scifi/fantasy) this was where they had a device called a Zievatron which was roughly the size of a house with a capsule the size of a portaloo in the centre and a door in it that you stepped into, outside of the capsule there were two huge probe type thingies that could be switched supposedly between our "reality/dimension" and another meaning that the capsule at the centre of the device could be either here or "there" in the book it went further in that there was a second door meaning that you could step into the capsule, have a switch flicked and then the door open on the other side, but then that would bring back the problem of you existing in that time, realistically you could only have a window that you could look through to see the other time, thus existing "outside" of time but looking in. Also this would maintain your presence in the future/present without disturbing the past.
But then wouldn't that be called a Television?
Well that's my er...five dollars worth
