I always enjoy websites that put predictions of the ultimate destruction of mankind into perspective. The following website is one of them.

Mine you, this is just ONE LIST on this website and it is ONLY chronicling all the various predictions that said the world would end between 1900 and today. There are other pages on that site that deal with prior predictions, and even some that go WELL BEYOND the Y2K38 "UNIX bug". I especially like the persistence of one Charles Taylor who kept coming back every few years with "OK....this time I REALLY mean it!" :D

So, as we can see just from the NINE PAGE list above, people have been doing this (and getting it terribly WRONG) for centuries now! Any reason we should listen to the likes of our latest (and resident) gloom & doomer, hdrkid? Naaaah, I didn't think so either.

That's a fantastic site, Rainman.

Who knows, perhaps one day, the coming of the great mushrooms will indeed put a full stop on the end of that hilarious list of nutty human crapots. But in the meantime, the likes of HDRKid will just have to dream about joining their hallowed hall of failure.

Reminds me of all the fifties and sixties sci-fi/disaster/monster movies that always seemed to feature some poor guy with a 'The end of the world is nigh' sandwich board. :D

I have always maintained that the Chicken Little (AlGore) "The World is Warming and it is Our Fault" was baloney...especially when you take into account that Mars is also warming! I am sure the people pushing their agenda with Gore at their front lines will conveniently ignore this. They are of the group of people who just LOVE to blame mankind for ALL things that "go wrong". Meanwhile, AlGore sits in his giant mansion in Tennessee consuming WAY more energy than the average person.

But I have RV'ed the future
and I have seen that the Global Warming fascists will ignore this data and continue their push to penalize 1st world countries economically. When in reality if carbon emissions DO warm the atmosphere as they claim, then we should be burning MORE (not less) in order to stoke the "fires" for the coming cold spell!

USA 193 is unlikely to be destroyed by a deliberately-triggered explosion, more likely by a collision (or 'kinetic kill'). It is best to look at the collision as if sitting stationary nearby. The interceptor will approach the collision point from some direction, probably in front and with a speed around 2 km/s relative to the impact point. If the aiming is right, then USA-193 will come by at orbital speed - ie 7 kilometres metres per second (17,000 miles per hour in another measuring system).

The challenge that the mission faces is to get the interceptor and USA-193 into the same place at the same time, and there is probably less than one metre, and a fraction of a second to play with. There are things that may be included in the interceptor's design to increase it's physical size - it may unfold panels to increase it's cross section, for example.

Using the Fengyun interception as a reference, the evidence is that the USA-193 should not be treated as the sort of ballistic collision that we saw in school science experiments.

If the two objects can be brought together then, with such a closing speed, the catastrophic disruption of USA-193 and its interceptor will produce an expanding ellipsoidal debris cloud still having something similar to USA-193's original orbital characterisics.

Within the cloud will be a collection of trajectories near to the original inclination but spreading either side, and there will be a range of apogees and perigees due to the vertical component of the spreading.

Fragments leaving the cloud with the lowest orbital velocity will hit the upper atmosphere fairly soon after the collision. It is a little like Soyuz or Shuttle having fired a retro-rocket. It is reasonable to assume that the first re-entries of fragments will occur about one quarter to one half orbit after the fragmentation. The remainder will be spread over a number of days.

A Pentagon briefing on February 14 indicated that the retro-effect of the impact is expected to cause fifty percent of the debris to come down within two circuits of the Earths."

We hit it. And it may be hard to believe, but we have my brother (partially) to thank for this. He has worked on the Standard Missile series ever since he started working for General Dynamics in the mid 70s as a guidance and control engineer. The SM-3 variant they used was developed specifically for ballistic missile defense... and it had his control alogrithms guiding it.

Way to go TJ, Raytheon and US Navy!

God love those wacky Chicken Littles at GLP...

Rather than look at a positive in how we have taken an initiative to AVOID a potential tragedy (one that they were crowing about, and even claiming Plutonium would kill us all), they will (once again) look for the potential deathwatch item. And one should note that people who do this NEVER attempt to assess the probability that their gloom and doom will actually come to pass. As far as they are concerned, death is on its way...probability=1. This is likely because they have no knowledge or grounding in probability and statistics, and so have no way to do an even rough order of magnitude probability estimate of the event they fear.

Those of you who are gloom and doomers: I hope you enjoy your lives. You should immediately go and dig your 50 foot hole in the ground, pack up your stores, and climb down the hole. The rest of us relatively balanced individuals will continue to enjoy our lives where we understand that ANYTHING involves risk, and it merely requires one to assess the risk vs. the benefits to determine if it is worthwhile.

My personal thought on the doom and gloomers is that the people who are into that, convinced of that or obssessivly follow stories on that (ie, Zeshua)-are unhappy in their own lives. Excitement junkies, drama junkies or people who just would like an excuse to have to stop living life as they are. If TSHF, then that bs no where job they hate doesn't matter. The feeling insecure about what they don't have-won't matter. The relationship that sucks doesn't matter, the people they are angry with might finally get theirs-they can see the people who "have it all" lose it and feel better about themselves. In my opinion doom and gloomers have low self-esteem and/or depression and the idea of chaos in the world brings some sort of satisfaction. Maybe they feel disconnected from the world and hope that a chaos scene would ban people together. Maybe they want to change their own lives, don't know how to start so it's projected into hoping the world will change.

I speak from experience on this. I don't judge the doom and gloomers. And I still read the forums and threads where the doom and gloom is predicted-but with a much different attitude and feeling than a few years ago.

I think at the heart of doom and gloomers is a desire for change, a desire to see the world become a better place, a desire for justice in the world. Its not a bad thing. Just that they believe that nothing short of an apolycolpse could bring that about.

I say, if you want to change the world-start with your own life. Create massive changes and pole shifts in your own world. Sometimes, that changes everything for the better. Worked for me.
