As pressure increases on the Bush administration to chart a new direction for the American military in Iraq, the president, vice president and all of their chief advisers on national security, foreign affairs and intelligence convened privately this morning with the Iraq Study Group, a highly touted bipartisan panel commissioned by Congress to examine the situation.
But the administration today warned against finding any immediate answers in the ongoing work of the commission co-chaired by Republican James Baker, who served as secretary of state for Bush’s father, and Lee Hamilton, the former Democratic congressman from Indiana who served as vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission. Insisting that the commission remains independent of the president, the White House said President Bush has not even spoken personally with Baker on the subject – “He is not the White House’s man on the commission,’’ spokesman Tony Snow said today.
