I wonder if we could time travel back to a specific time in our past that we have been dreaming of in our mind would we end up being disappointed? I have always dreamed of going back to the late 1970's when i was a child. Life just seemed better back then, they were simpler,more innocent times. People didn't take themselves so seriously and life was more fun.

Would the reality be the same though? would we get there and find it to be an alien world where we no longer belonged? would we feel completely alone and be desperate to get back home to the present time? Would we think 'not much to see here, i'm going home'? Would time travel be one big anti climax?

 
More than likely. To you, the 70's were a simpler, more innocent time where everything seemed fun. To me, the 90's were (yea, 90's kid thing, yadda yadda). Most of those feelings are more than likely just a result of a mix of nostalgia, and the fact that you were a kid back then, so life seemed like one grand adventure because you were more innocent and didn't have the responsibilities you had now.

Honestly, I think I'd be completely lost if I ever traveled to any time in the 90's, or 80's, or 70's. Most of my knowledge and humor, and mannerisms are completely millennial and no one would more than likely get my humor, my references, or why I act the way I do. Plus I don't know what I'd be able to do in a time frame like that because so much of my life revolves around current technology, especially the internet.

 
I would be interested in traveling back to the 70s and kidnapping my former body, doing a brain transplant and sending my young brain in an old body back, then relive my life with the wisdom that I've gained as an adult with the figure of a young hottie. I could rule the world then LOL.

Seriously... No period in time was perfect. The 70s saw a lot of racism and mysogany. I wouldn't mind going to some specific dates to relive, though.

Well one thing is that the visiting observer's emotional state, is not always hooked up to that past event.This is a situation similar to two people making wild passionate love on a bed, but grandma walks in, sits on the bed and is eating a sandwich all while this is going on.Mind you now, there probably are time traveling historians who go back in time just to get the real deal on a past event.Pinter

Yes, nostalgia has a lot to do with my wish to visit the late 70's and it's true that i didn't have the responsibilities that i do now, so i would be unable to recreate the original experience and would probably feel deflated and disappointed. I don't think it would be the lack of technology that would be the problem, i think it would be relatively easy to adapt to no mobile phones, internet, satellite TV etc after a short while. I think the difficulty would be the isolation of a world that no longer had a place for me and the realisation that the world has completely moved on, people see the world differently now and live their lives accordingly.

There was a lot of racism around in the 1970's as Siren mentions and it seemed to be accepted by a lot of society. I can't help feeling that the problem is even worse these days, in the 70's people were quite openly prejudiced based on the colour of a persons skin. Whilst today the racism is not so blatant and widespread it seems to go deeper. Racism now is not just about skin colour, but about a persons religion, their employment status and the way they live their lives. Maybe the majority of racism in the 70's was down to ignorance, today it seems to be about ignorance, bigotry, and hatred. I fear that we have made very little progress in eradicating the problem in the last 35 years, contrary to what many may think. Maybe if time travel becomes reality it will help us to learn because we sure don't seem to with the resources we have now.

 
I feel that most of the past that we think of is glorified. We tend to think about the past, especially our own, as being simpler, quaint, more enjoyable. I think that each generation has thought this about their childhood. As technology constantly changes and advances, everyone grew up with the "latest" technology. So while the 70's may seem like a simpler time, for the people living there it was state-of-the-art. The advent of color television and national distribution of movies on things like VHS and Betamax, were all futuristic technologies that blew people away. I think that even with the technology we have today, we will still look back on it in 30 years and think it was archaic and simple.
