I keep seeing a lot of discussion of how when someone alters something in "the past" it creates a new time line. Hmmm.
Two questions on that: Where is the evidence for the ability to even travel to the past in the first place?...and...where is the rule book that says "changing something" creates a new timeline? Where is there any evidence that there are multiple timelines or "dimensions" in the first place? Relativity is just that. Relative. Postulating the creation of a new timeline is just a convenient way to avoid paradox. If travel to the non-existent "past" can't be done, the "paradox vs. new timeline" question becomes moot.
Also, another postulation I see tossed around a lot is that each day the events of our lives create new timelines or dimensions. Again. Hmmmm. Where is there any empirical evidence for any of this? I believe in Occam's Razor. Why would the universe be any more complicated than it needs to be to function. There's probably some thermodynamics one can come up with if you contemplate long enough that would render multiple universes/dimensions as usless. Beyond the sense in which we use the semantics of the terms that is.
Even if we were to allow that these hypothetical timelines exist (or are created), how would that constitute "Time Travel" as opposed to just some form of "temporal" displacement?...(whatever that means.) You aren't going anywhen back or forward, you're just going "elsewise".
Speculations of time travel seem to be wishful thinking that one could somehow go some where/when, that doesn't really exist in the first place, to go "to". Good Sci Fi, but no bearing on reality.
Kind of like the "Transporter" on Star Trek. Maybe we will someday figure a way to disassemble material to its basic quanta, transmit it, and re-assemble the quanta again, (or some COPY of it). Fine for freight delivery, lousy for living organisims that suffer death from being rent on even way more macro cosmic levels than quanta. If we build it, I'll betcha NO one comes. Or goes, for that matter. No pun intended.
