In search of otherworldly sights? Just find the right icy pond. On certain days during Boston’s long winter, residents can glimpse the stars by looking down. On the dove-colored surfaces of frozen ponds or lakes, shapes appear, rounded in the center with spiky arms stretching outward. The water, a scramble of gray and white, seems to mirror a star-pricked sky. Instead of appearing brighter than their surroundings, as their spacefaring counterparts do, these shapes are darker, showcasing the deep blue below. The moody wells and meandering branches might evoke a tie-dyed shirt or a squashed spider, legs akimbo. (Or, if your mind’s eye gazes inward, maybe the forking dendri…

YouTube star GeoWizard, aka Tom Davies, shares some straight talk about his linear style of adventure. Tom Davies knows a thing or two about staying the course. The 29-year-old British adventurer, also known as GeoWizard, first gained a following through YouTube videos that showcased his skill playing the popular web-based game GeoGuessr. His channel, which he describes as “home of the mischievous adventure,” has 74 million views and counting. Davies is perhaps now best known for his “Mission Across” series, which chronicles his adventures trying to cross entire countries in a straight line. He chooses a route, uploads it to a handheld GPS, and sets off. The mission’s su…

A conservation team wanted to know if removing killer bees would make life easier for Lear's macaw. Maximo Cardoso had never used a crossbow before, but he was intuitively able to assemble the Barnett Raptor FX, a model typically marketed for deer hunting. The field guide also displayed natural marksmanship. So it was agreed: He would be the one to launch the poison. At the base of a sheer rock face amid dry scrub in Bahia, Brazil, decked out in a beekeeping suit, Cardoso took aim at a 45-degree angle, the crossbow loaded with bolts modified to carry glass vials of insecticide. He was targeting small cavities in the red sandstone above that held nests of invasive Africa…

Low-cost seismometers could give rural communities an alert system, or begin to decipher elephant communication. When individuals in a group of elephants have been separated, even for the briefest of moments, they get rather excited upon reuniting. “They’re sort of like dogs who’ve come back to their owners after being separated for 15 minutes. Super excited, they’re saying, ‘Where have you been, it’s so good to see you again,’” says Oliver Lamb, a geophysicist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “They get really happy, they’re really happy to see each other again.” It may seem a little odd that a geophysicist is describing elephant behavior, but Lamb is…

In botanic gardens, the lineage of a famously smelly plant is threatened. What can save it? This story was originally published on Undark and appears here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. The alien-like blooms and putrid stench of Amorphophallus titanum, better known as the corpse flower, draw big crowds and media coverage to botanical gardens each year. In 2015, for instance, around 75,000 people visited the Chicago Botanic Garden to see one of their corpse flowers bloom. More than 300,000 people viewed it online. But despite the corpse flower’s fame, its future is uncertain. The roughly 500 specimens that were living in botanical gardens and…

The oceans contain various caverns that scientists call “blue holes” and they don’t know how they were created. They are apparently going to start exploring one near Florida https://bgr.com/2020/08/09/blue-hole-florida-green-banana/

Let's debunk the hoax that humans are causing the entire planet to heat up. My statements are not conclusive, so please add to this. Also, I am not denying that Earth is warming. I am debating the cause. Humans only occupy 10% of the planet, yet people feel we have the ability to change the temp of a huge planet Climate changes every 100,000 years, so the earth is warming up all by herself. In fact, we are still in the last ice age, hence the warming. It is ending. Climate change is partially the result of Earth's orbit https://www.britannica.com/science/global-warming/Variations-in-Earths-orbit Other causes of Earth's warming: http://ossfoundation.us/pr…

I thought it was interesting to see where there would be floods in case something actually did happen. I was wondering if anyone knew of the maps on this forum or if they knew where the floods would take place or where someone may be safe if something happens. Just thinking of moving to places and was wondering might be best.

I read and saw a video yesterday about yet another area that people are hearing strange sounds in the air. I find this very interesting so I have tried to find more information on it. I found a radio blog by Linda Moulton Howe that saws that they think this is from seismic activity, some articles think it is from fracking. I personally have no idea what it is but I have heard it and at the time I wondered if perhaps I was getting an ear infection or something. It is scary stuff, is it possible it is the seven trumpets marking end times?

Was given a link to an article entitled, " Bill Gates wants to spray millions of tonnes of dust into the stratosphere..." . I read the article and my first thought was along the lines of , " What could possibly go wrong?" . Bill Gates is helping fund an effort to create a barrier made of dust ( calcium carbonate ) around the Earth. The plan is that this barrier will deflect enough rays and heat from the Sun and allow cause planet to cool down. According to sources on-line, they've already conducted experiments using ice. Obviously, the dust will not remain in the atmosphere and settle onto the surface of Earth. What will the dust do to the oceans , …

Here we are at the end of 2008. Take a look at the data from 4 temperature sources over the last 8 years, including a linear regression of those last 8 years: The last 8 years of data show NO WARMING. There is no global warming! Repeat it to yourself over and over, because it is true! THERE IS NO GLOBAL WARMING! Data proves this! RMT

Cosmo posted a new blog entry Hawaii is now 22 acres smaller Lava deltas are new land formed from lava that enters the sea and hardens in a wide fan shape. They are usually layers upon layers of sloping loose fragments and lava flow. They're awesome to look at and visit, but they can be very unstable and collapse into the sea very easily. One of Hawaii's famous lava deltas is called Kamokuna, which was formed from the Big Island's Kilauea volcano spewing lava and meeting the Pacific Ocean. The Kamokuna lava delta is a very popular tourist spot but can also be very dangerous place to hang out, which you can see in the video below. https://www.youtube.com/wa…

The upper atmosphere of the Equator gets less Sunlight hours than the rest of Earths upper atmosphere. I make this statement without proof of science to see the results ten years from now. I have never heard this and believe that it is not common knowledge. Over the years many statements get made , just well thought out observations , and people just talk as though it was always known from ever. The people that make these statements get proven correct and no credit is ever associated to them. The hurricanes and tsunami development areas are getting less sunlight hours than the rest of the upper atmosphere.

I really can't understand what has happened to science and scientists over the past years. Maybe it's not science as a whole but only those that are eager to accept an agenda and submit their finding to agree with a desired premise and then only those in agreement find their efforts accepted and their results published. I don't know for sure but I am very disappointed in the field I have followed and loved for so many years. These are estimated values calculated from the best information science currently has available. For what that's worth. Mass of Earth: 5.972 × 10^24 kg Mass of Water: 1.350 x 10^21 kg A little math and it becomes apparent that the water…

As these days pass by, and the polar vortex freezes a nation, I have concluded that I can no longer simply deny global warming. For years, I simply went about my simulated AI life, neglecting the impending apocalypse foretold by our climate change benefactors, but I did so at my own peril. Now, it is not enough to simply deny global warming. I must mock it outright. It is so absolutely ludicrous that so many people were deceived by politicians claiming scientifically superior knowledge that their followers must now be publically and aggressively shamed. Every chance I get, I will ridicule and scorn those who fervently demanded an end to a way of life which enabled freedom…
